stock tires in cold weather
just curious how your stock performance tires do in the cold (20-40 degrees)?
I'm not talking snow/ice. Just when the outdoor air is cold. I usually put snow tires on, but I probably won't drive the M much in the winter as it's not my daily. Just wondering on clear sky, cold days if the stock tires hold up ok for normal - slightly aggressive driving. |

Driveable for sure, but get slightly aggressive and you will be 4 wheel drifting, which is actually fun if controlled. In PA, you'll really need a set of winters....

It’ll be parked. Might consider it tho. I have to do the winter/summer tires stuff on my X5. I’d rather just park the M5 in shitty weather.

This is with the Pirellis mind you - approx 10k km (6k miles) on tires not yet at wear indicators. Last month we had some 25F to 30F days and very noticeable change even on dry asphalt / concrete. Front end would break away a lot sooner and the rear ABS would struggle to the keep rear in light from high speed decel. I changed over to Michelin Alpin PA4 staggered setup and great traction and control in same temps conditions as would be expected of course. The softer compound does allow for a bit more lateral flex and hard braking not as exact as in summer on summer tires but again that would be expected.
I should add that I was able to stop more than a car length sooner with the winters even on dry pavement at approx 35F the other day ( 60-0mph). So, even without snow / ice, the winter tire compound has a better coefficient of friction with the road surface in all conditions when cold - even dry and clear pavement. It was a nice little physics experiment! (Disclaimer: n=1, no statistic methods applied, lotsa bias, non blinded). Enjoy. Last edited by northtorque; 12-17-2019 at 04:04 PM.. I drove mine a few times in sub 20 temps and the car felt like it was on skis. The feeling was very unconfident. Of course it can be done but the car feels squirrely. The summer compound gets hard like hard plastic in cold temps. I have my snows now in the garage just waiting to be put on.

i have been driving my car with 25 to 35 degrees weather for the past 6 weeks on my PS4S's and it works just fine while driving normally with clear weather, with black ice or snow i would not be confident driving the car .
i have my winter set ready in the garage just been postponing that change due to laziness and lack of snow |

It was 20 around my way this morning and the car did fine with the PS4S. I did a few straightaway runs to 110 today on the freeway with no issues and the car felt fine. Obviously you don't want to take any kind of bend on the road at 110. Taking it easy on turns and drive the car with the care it will be more than fine on dry pavement. I have a winter truck for the wet nasty stuff but I just can't resist feeding this beast 20-degree weather when its dry outside. The engine feels so good in this weather like its running 110%

I agree, under normal driving circumstances, it's fine. It's when you get slightly aggressive on turns and maneuvers, that she gets squirrely. Note, that I am in D2, S+throttle, S steering, S suspension and 4wd sport / DSC off. That's how I daily drive her. With my snows in same format, she is very sure footed in all situations w/ same performance settings.
