They are all seasons... not winters.

Are you keeping them on year around?

SORRY.... I missed a statement.

They are the best of the all-seasons.

Not sure yet. I am just exploring my options. I see that you say the best of the all seasons. So I will take that as a good thing. Thanks

I’m also looking at running the AS/3+ year round. Interested in feedback on that approach

Update: per Michelin these tires are not recommended as they don't support the load size. BMW put 105y on the front and 107y on the rear. The Michelin tires above are 101y on the front and 103y on the rear. Do we care even though Michelin says not recommended? Any thoughts appreciated.

This whole selection process ended up being more complicated than I planned. I personally ended up going with the 20" Pirelli tires that are recommended on Tire Rack. But I did have to pay more for custom wheels. More on those in a couple months.

That's interesting as I have been looking to do all seasons rather than swapping summers/winters.
I would need to check the tire itself but Tire Rack has the Michelin Pilot sport (20) which is the OEM tire I have on my car with load rating of 102y/104y respectively.

Where did you get those tires? Tire Rack is showing the rears as unavailable until mid November. I assume you are talking about the Winter Sottozeros. Thanks.

I got them from Tire Rack. I had actually been watching them for a while and they got stock a few weeks ago. The site almost immediately said they only had 3 left. So I ordered them. The tires are sitting in my garage waiting for wheels.

The Winter Sottozeros are better winter performance tires. On my x5m they kept me feeling confident in colder conditions whilst still being an active driver. I've heard those tires feel more like all seasons. Also when I went smaller width on my old M5 (blizzacks) I felt a massive drop off mid corner stability. If your not planning to drive in heavy snow but use for more safer cold temperature and little snow and ice I would try and stay with the 20inc and same size and go for the Winter Sottozeros. If your In a very snowy place and drive in snow often the thinner smaller tire makes sense.

I agree, the Sottozeros is a great tire. Unfortunately I can’t find anyone who has the rears 285/30/20. This includes the Tire Rack.

Couple of questions/observations

1. Tire rack has the Michelin rated better than the Sottozero
2. Does BMW recommend Sottozero for the 2018 M5
3. Is Sottozero available in the appropriate load rating for the 2018 M5

Blank

1. Your call, maybe the ratings are right but 4.5 out of 5 for the 20 inch pirrelli is pretty good. Also look at the types of cars the reviewers have against both tires, Porsche 911, Panamera and M5. For the alpines, Subaru, VW Chevy. To be honest I've had 3 sets of Pirelli no alpine so I can not compare.

2. BMW recommends products that they commercially are connected with. Given they sell pzeros I would assume yes but don't know.

3. Regarding load. Summer Y rating =186mph winter W rating = 168mph. I'm unsure it makes a big difference.

thanks
it all makes sense except for the load
your comment was about the speed rating
the load rating on original tires is 105 front and 107 for rear
tire shop i spoke to says it dangerous to use anything below those #s
Thats what they say, i dont really know
what were the load ratings on the sottozeros?

Are you sure? I just went out to my car and it is 102 F and 104 R. This is the same as the winter tires that I got that was approved by Tire Rack.

I think you are good. The issue seems to be the 19 vs 20. Tire Rack shows 105/107 for 19s and 102/104 for 20s. I have the 19s.

Would like to keep this thread active. I know we are still a few months from cold weather....would like to get the winter setup sorted out sooner rather than later.

Anyone have part #rs or a source for buying a nice winter setup?

I would like to also keep this thread active. I am pretty interested in the Pirelli Winter Sottozeros (for 20 inch wheels) but cannot find the rear ones anywhere (285/35R20 104W XL) including TireRack. TireRack claims they will have them in late November but that is pushing the winter weather.

I am seeing rear Sottozeros in the right size and load ratings but with only "V" speed ratings (285/35R20 104V XL). These seem to be available. I am not planning on driving 150+ mph in winter, so I wonder if these will do.

I did talk to the parts guy at my local BMW dealership and he said BMW would have a winter package of some kind but it wouldn't be listed until later this month or October. Anybody have more information on that? Part no.? Can we rely on that actually happening and being available?

I am interested in this as well. Was hoping to find a set of all season UHP tires like the Pilot A/S 3+ and run them most of the year. I found the fronts for 20" on Tire Rack but not rear due to our required 104 XL load rating. Tire Rack would not recommend the 100W's that were the right size for the rear.

On another note my SA just emailed and said to call my local dealer (I bought out of state) as they just released a winter tire package. Didn't say what they were but gave me $898 a piece for fronts and $933 for rear. Tire and 706M rim. Need to check as that sounds too cheap. Rims alone are $3k+. Guessing they are Pirelli Sottozero on tires.
