So after reading some of the posts on here i decided to change the brake pads on the car. I was really tired of pulling up to stop signs sounding
like a school bus and couldn't handle driving this car for two plus more years with the noise.

I changed the pads to the carbon ones offered at ACG Automotive.
(858) 633-1017 - Gerrard, he was great!

I just drove 350 miles with the new pads and this is what i learned.

1) No noise whatsoever.
2) completely clean wheels, no brake dust and funny enough
the rust i was seeing on my wheels is no longer there.
3) The car does not have the same BWM stopping power that it had when i picked up the car but the difference is minimal as i mostly drive in the city. For me, it was really worth the change as i will never take
the car to the track.

I have been driving BMW's for 30 years and have never had this issue. My last car was an F10 and there was no noise at all.

Come on BMW! $120K car and it sounds like a junker out of the gate?

I guess spending $700 for the pads + $375 installation is not something i should worry about but you would think as we have all spent a lot of money on this car we wouldn't have to make such a change.

Now i'm a happy M Driver once again. Finally!

Great info and was your's a constant issue? Mine is very intermittent, and doesn't happen very often, but annoys the hell out of me when it does. It's my only real gripe. My dealer said it's a known condition w/ no solution...

I still don't understand why BMW can't make or source a pad that doesn't squeal. I've had several AMG's and some P-cars that have been whisper quiet and still had excellent brakes.
In fairness the Porsches have the issue too - Porsche even took time to make a video about the topic.
Yep, the GT3 and GTR also have that brake noise and it's not a sign of bad brakes...

Super loud squeal on steel brakes here. Going to try and bed them in and we’ll see.

I don't know about the rest of you, but this pisses me off for a $120k automobile. I don't want to drop another bill on replacing parts that are defective. If they make that noise and there are aftermarket versions out there that don't, it's a defect in my book.

I agree. BMW should put out a service bulletin and replace the defective brake pads. I've never had to consider doing a brake job out-of-pocket on a car with 500 miles.

My guess is that they would argue that the aftermarket versions don't perform as well as the OEM. This has been an issue since at least the F10 so it's not like it's a new issue. There must be some reason they are sticking with these noisy pads. But again, some people don't have any squeal issues so maybe it's a small percentage?? Both my F10 and F90 squeal like crazy. I expected it when I bought the F90 and was not disappointed.

I have had the F90 M5 with CCB and now this Competition with Steel no noises at all, now could it be temp related as the temperatures you get are high and depending were Very Low, her in the UK the temperatures are Moderate.
I always snow foam and Jet wash off, this could be a factor also, try it and see IF it makes a difference.

I had the ACG Carbon Ceramic brake pads installed yesterday, the squeak is gone.

Stopping power on OEM pads is incredible, trade off is a little noise,
No manufacturer would ever be concerned about that trade off.

I don’t think you realize how loud this is. Just hung up with my friend who can’t even drive with the windows down. The “performance brakes” argument is bunk. His 911 doesn’t make that noise.

Buy a set of aftermarket pads ... problem solved.

Hmm, not sure that is a great solution. Shouldn't BMW buy those pads?

Seriously, the car should not do this - and from a quick search, it is only certain people who are having the issue. So... it certainly sounds like a problem rather than a purposeful design.

Problem has been around forever on these cars; BMW says it's normal and has not really provided a real long term solution.

BMW is not going to pay for it; good luck trying.

The last 3 M5's I've owned have had some variation of this issue. I've replaced pads on all of them including my F90 M5 Comp and the problem is gone.

You can deal with BMW or replace them yourself.

Either something is actually wrong with your friend’s car or his driving environment and/or habits just results in such freakishly loud brake noise.

Mine squeaks and squeals a bit but not any louder or worse than my former RS7 or current GT3 with steel brakes. Like others have said, manufacturers can elect to use less noisy and less dusty brake pad material by sacrificing just a little bit of performance, but since this is BMW’s top performance 5-series model, BMW decided to sacrifice nothing in braking performance with the standard brakes, which I’m totally fine with. The noise doesn’t bother me one bit.

Supposedly my dealership is waiting on BMW to send a new and improved pad. As soon as I get it installed, will report back on status.

also have the squealing issue here getting worse as weather is warming up. I alos get a squeal after i have stopped and hold the brakes like it gives it an extra squeeze. im not sure what that is about. more like a creaking noise at that point i can replicate it everytime i come to a complete stop it would creak a little after i come to a stop. sounds like a old wooden floor? is this normal as well?
