They work great for the single quarts, but don't drain fast enough for the 5 quart jugs, so you gotta pour in slowly with those, learned that the hard way🤣🤣🤣

Great thread!

By chance anyone know the part number to that (plastic round) oil drain plug access cover?

Does anyone have a round plastic cover over both the drain plug and the oil filter housing? My car has one over only the drain plug. For PN, check realoem under body or chassis and find the stiffening plate.

Exactly the question I asked three years ago. Apparently there is a cover over the drain plug site, but not over the oil filter housing. I don't think the same indents are there for a screw on plate, it is odd that that side is not covered.

My first oil change is complete!

A few observations:
1. As others report, the stock oil filter canister burps out oil upon removal. I replaced it with a Weistech canister, swapping over the springy clip at the bottom of the stock unit.

2. You cannot reset the oil change interval if you also have a low fuel indicator. The fuel warning pops up before you can hold in the button for ten seconds, negating the effort. Once I added fuel, easy peasy.

3. The original owner left me a present at the bottom of the engine bay…. A shorty flat head screwdriver wedged in a plastic cover. It was where the arrow is, and I removed the 8mm head screw (circle) to get it out.

4. I had to build a 3 ft ramp to get the car up on my metal ramps. An 8ft 2x12 cut down, double stacked with angled approaches worked fine. I put the car in 2WD when approaching to avoid shooting the ramp out.

How much oil is from the min-max levels?
I know on conventional dipsticks is 1qt of oil from marked min all the way to top off at max mark. I just want to know how to guesstimate oil add when it comes down to that.

I think it is 1L. It does not detect overfilled. So when I do my wife's X5 I add 1L less than it says, start the car and measure and fill as needed. I plan to do the M5 the same way.

Thank you pmsteinm. I won’t freak out this time if I see the oil level drop a bit.

Wouldn’t expect to be adding oil like the X5. Night and day between the two N63 engines so far for me. And haven’t seen anyone mention having to add oil like we have to in the X5 side of the garage.

Pardon but is this kit good to change the oil out? I wasn’t easily finding one on FCP Euro though I’ve seen people recommend going there, too. I tried to read the entire “what oil do you use” thread and my brain shut down.

That's a good kit.

Yesh in general oil threads are a waste of time. For the most part, if you can buy it over the shelf, if it's any where near CLOSE to what the "optimum" spec of your engine is, you're going to be fine. The real "optimum" spec varies car to car and climate to climate, so don't sweat it. Unless you are tracking or racing the car, use close to the BMW spec and stick to it.

Quick question as I have searched and not found the answer to this question.

What size wrench/socket do I need to remove the new style oil filter housing? This is for the one with the drain plug in it.

36mm socket. Make sure you get the correct oil filter kit, it comes with a new drain plug. Many people think that you can just swap the o-ring but that is not the correct wayZ

Oil Filter is passenger side, drain plug driver's side at rear of engine. Easy to get at each without removing anything, which is very nice. Good clear drainage from each sight also, but a little splash spill as you pull the filter housing off.

Items needed.

Unless your mad, good set of ramps. I have seen videos of people doing this kind of work on Jacks and/or Jack Stands. D'ooh. And I have had patients in the Trauma Bay who did this kind of work on Jacks and/or Jack stands. I wish I had a lift.

8 MM Allen Wrench (I used a small hand held one but had to back it up with a wrench since it was very tight) and picked up an 8 mm Allen socket when I ran to pick up the adjustable filter wrench. The one I had already was the smaller version...d'ooh.

86 mm socket for the oil filter is preferred, I used the adjustable one as I could not find an 86 mm one locally, that is coming in 2 days from Amazon for the next oil change. I should have bought it with the oil kit from ECS but thought I could get one locally. But no.

Oil Filter with o-ring and seal for oil pan plug. ECS sent kit with Oil, filter, and new oil pan plug. Was $152 shipped. It came with 11 Liters, but the car calls for 10 Liters. I think ECS was thinking 10.6 QUARTS, so they sent 11 bottles which are liters. So I have extra. LOL.

The drain plug is under a nice cover. Comes off with a quick twist. The filter housing kind of looks like there is supposed to be a cover over that also, [...]
Hi Dr. Mike,

Thanks for the great write up with photos and strong detail.

I would like to ask you if you can kindly reconfirm if the Torque Specs for the oil sump plug and oil filter housing are 25 NM (18 Lb.Ft).

I think you mentioned later on in the thread that it may have been 7.5 Lb.Ft. or so, if I remember correctly?

I'll be doing an interim oil service soon and wanted to double check these torque specs.

Thanks

I just checked the manual I have. I may not have had that when I did the first oil change. There is what I have from current info.

Both drain plug and the oil filter housing are torqued to 40 nm. Sounds high to me. 29 Ft Pounds.

The filter housing of that high sounds odd...but that is what the manual says.

Maybe someone else can chime in.....

Mike
