Why are people so hung up about the fact that the new M5 will not have a DCT? The 8 speed seems pretty damn quick to me. Dare I say, quicker than the DCT in the now older M5.

Did it double shift in the first video? Thats what I don't like about the automatics, when it gets close to redline the car will shift for you and if you hit the shifter too it double shifts...

Intentional manual double shift. That's actually not even the interior shots from the 0-100 and 0-200 runs. The M5 does not shift on its own at redline.

None of the newer automatics upshift automatically in manual mode. My M235i will stay at the redline if I don't manually shift.

Rather considerable delay in up-shifts via the paddles observed in the video--I think that highlights the criticism perfectly.

When I first saw digital gauges I hated them. Been looking at analog for my whole life. Some other manufacturers they seemed a little tacky or video game like.

Even though I don't have a full digital gauge on any of my current vehicles I have some with partial. I'm starting to like them more and more. I test drove a few cars recently that had all digital and actually starting to like them better. Or at least some of them when done properly.

I like that you can morph many functions and features onto the gauge area. Move things around. Go full screen on some things. Definitely the future.

Oh and the new M5 looking very quick indeed!

There's just something so pleasantly violent in that F10 M5 video that's completely missing from the F90 video.

Agreed.

if you can notice the delay by eye, then the shifts are too slow. An eye blink is around 300 ms also the speed of gen 1 SMGs and current gen automatics. MB's performance MCT shifts in 100 ms in S and M mode.

DCTs/DSGs shift in 80 ms or less, it'll be really hard to "see" it lag for a DCT.

The 0-60 debate has always fascinated me. Why do you want it to be quicker?
It's like competing on who can ejaculate the quickest. Idiots!

are you basing the argument on the M5 shouldn't be a 'quick' car or a track car?

I don't know. My 2017 X5 M Sport paddle shifts respond with minimal lag. It's certainly faster than I can shift on my 335i 6MT. I'm not saying it'll be fun, because it won't be, but it'll be fast with minimal lag. The M5 is supposed to have an even quicker shift than the normal ZF 8HPs in the rest of their sport transmission cars. I think it's really hard to see the reaction time in the video, you will just have to try it yourself.

From what I can tell (again this is all an assumption) is that when in Launch Control upshifts happen automatically even in manual mode, so what the driver did was upshift like RIGHT after the car automatically upshifted into 2nd, so thats when it went to 3rd quickly, then hit the paddle again so it went to 4th. From my eye he only hit the paddle twice even though his finger gestures look like he hit it more than once.

Why BMW would put out such a confusing video in terms of paddle control, launch control and such is beyond me. Not to mention the one launch from behind the car when it bucks the 1 to 2 shift to somehow demonstrate it doesnt auto upshift at redline (I would sure hope not). I'd rather see the full 1-2 shift to see how it compares to that terrible M550i video that was posted of the guy at the drag strip and how his car bucked on the 1-2 shift bad.

Here's the video I'm referencing on how bad the ZF8 is in the M550. Whole car bucks like he has a manual transmission...
