Correct, there's no comparison between the Aisin in the CTS-V Sport (or the 8L90 in the CTS-V, for that matter) and the ZF8. With proper tuning, the ZF8 is nearly as responsive as the DCT, and holds a lot more power. It's a lot smoother too . . . more fitting of a luxury sedan.

This looks to be very beastly.

Like the idea of a "switchable" AWD function, if you can truly go 100% of all available power to RWD only, if that's what you want at the time.

If this is to be the approach of the addition of AWD to the M-cars, I would imagine it's about the best way they could have done it.

Specs sound just like the 2018 E63 announced couple months ago, just a little slower 0-60. Twin-turbo V8, slushbox, selectable awd or rwd.

ZF8

Guys I have the 8 speed in my 2016 X5M and I have no problems with it at all. I also had the DCT in my F80 M3 and BMW did a great job with the ZF8. The only difference in the clutches is the DCT would shift immediately to the lowest gear possible harshly when using the paddles, or stomping on it, whereas the 8 speed doesn't do that but still shifts faster than you can do it. If you stomp on the gas in 7th gear it will throw you into 4th gear in an instant, what a blast. The settings (m buttons) really work great with 8 speed. I'm sure BMW will tune the 8 speed even more with the new M5.

Why, it's available on the fly with the flick of a switch or mode. Nothing like this has been done before in this type of car. This really expands on the versatility that is the M5.

I kept saying, people will complain now but by this time next year, they will say it's the greatest M5 ever.

Most likely, yeah, time and cost... They can just simply reuse the same slushbox from the X5 M.

I had a look on ZF's website and their 8-speed DCT is rated up to 1,000 Nm, and it is the transmission used in the new Panamera.

It's basically the luxury GT-R I've always wanted, but still can't afford.

Bro are these not publicity stunts? First the CAD drawings now this...? Got everyone talking.

(But I want to talk about the £1100 quid BMW are charging me for warped discs after 15 months of commuting : )

Depreciation is your best friend and I promise you will be able to afford it after a couple years. The F10 M5 has held up very well by comparison to the E60 M5 which was riddled with issues (still one of the best in my opinion though). Just be patient

Does it really matter if it's 3.6 or 3.4 or whatever? Besides bragging rights I mean. If they get other things right I couldn't care less whether it's 3.6 seconds to 60 or low 3's. It's a 600 hp beast any way you slice it.

That's not what I meant. I'm just surprised that people are surprised about the ZF when all the news and interviews have been saying the same thing for a couple of months now.

yes. these guys seems to have spies in each other's r&d depts. now there is no differentiation between them. no piece of innovation that pulls you one way. there has to be a reason Porsche is developing a new dct while bmw is going back to a slushbox. i mean if you want pure smoothness an luxury then get a m550.

It's bad enough that they are using the same engine from the F10 M5, now there's a possibility that an M5 will get an Automatic Transmission?! How about ///M Division develops a DCT that can hold up to 900lbs/ft of torque? After all, I did it! For less than $6k too! Rebuilding my DCT with robust clutches wasn't too hard at all. No automatic transmission is going to be as fast as a DCT. The Auto on the C7 Z06 Vette is great but it's not lightning fast like a PDK or MDCT is. Or how about, instead of increasing torque, they work on significantly reducing the weight of the M5? I feel like there is little innovation and/or reason for me to want to buy any future M product. They aren't pioneering engine development anymore, they are just improving on what's already been done before. Sure the S85 V10 and the SMG were pieces of garbage when it came to long term reliability, but at least it was in keeping with great innovation and the exotic nature of motorsport. Now we may be seeing an M5 with the exact same type of transmission that is on a Kia Sorrento. With that said, I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever, that the next M5 will be the best and fastest M5 ever, however how they are going about it is extremely disappointing for me personally. I have no problem with an AWD system on an M5 or the fact that they want to throw lane departure warning on the car, or other weight adding features, but at least make an M5 with some Carbon Fiber doors, or at least doors made out of aluminum to get the weight down. How about developing a 3.0L Twin Turbo V10 engine that revs to 8,000rpm, makes 600hp, and is twice as fuel efficient as the S63tu engine and give the M5 some true exotic nature again, while complying with CARB and CAFE standards. I'm going to laugh if they have to mount the engine block too high and forward of the front axle, just like Audi does because they want to make the next M5 AWD. Although I dissent on this subject, I know people will continue to buy the car and claim it is the fastest car they've ever driven. Well the Tesla Model S can do 0-60 in 2.2 seconds these days and I have no desire to buy one of the those, too boring. I want ///M cars to sound and feel like race cars again. I guess I will just have to build my own.
Would you stand behind your DCT that can take 900 pound feet of torque, and developed it using 6k, with a warranty? Would it be reliable? If so, then you are better than the engineers at Getrag who make the dual clutch transmissions.
And you already know that BMW AG will not ok the M Division to develop a 3 liter Twin Turbo V10 that makes 600 hp, and revs to 8k. And then said engine has to be reliable? Pipe dreams. Over-stressed engines tend not to be reliable.

BMW has said before that they are transitioning into a tech and mobility company. Soon, all the things that make your heart race will be gone.

This will be a great car.

But, what's the value prop for this over an E63? I'm not seeing it. Different sound maybe?

If you lease then the value prop of the M5 over the E63S is stunning and deeply obvious.
