It would be awesome if they used two electric motors up front to provide propulsion during max acceleration, slippery conditions as well as a true torque vectoring system to help in handling like the new NSX. Force induction, electric hybrid motors are the wave of the future because traditional setups has now reached its limit in terms of putting power to the ground and meeting stricter emission requirements.

any chance the front wheels might be electric powered? seems like something several manufacturers are looking into.

Makes complete sense considering the amount of HP and torque coming out from that engine. I can't wait to have a go in it when it comes out!

Isn't the G30 using some carbon a la 7er? If the F90 or whatever M5 uses the same structure, the AWD weight difference should be offset.
As long as the drive feeling status the same, or improves, AWD is a good thing. It will make the cars more viable for those whom live in snowy/mountainous climates. Innovation can be a good thing, I hope M can deliver with this new M5, because it will set the benchmark for all other M cars.

That doesn't mean the F90 has to follow suit. CLAR was specifically designed for significant flexibility like this. |

I love my AWD X6M and how it puts down the power, with a lighter M5, of course AWD will help overall traction and acceleration time. Looking forward to it as I may very well get one in couple of years.
Btw, the 0-60 needs to be 3.5 to be acceptable. |

Absolutely pointless to have 500-600HP without AWD. The car will not hold that power down with RWD. I bought a new body style CLS550 in 2013. I think they have 402 HP (with 4Matic)....and it seemed faster than my M6GC now. I swore my M6 was going to be my last M car unless they started doing AWD. I think the new M550i X-Drive being significantly faster 0-60 than the current M5 (without AWD) tells you all you need to know.

You have the choice for winter tires, you can get something performance oriented, ie michelin pilot alpin which are for cold days with ice and will perform good on cold and wet pavement, and you have those that are made for snow, which are the opposite (michelin X-ice or the WS-80), do good in the snow and ice, ok in the wet but will not have as much grip on pavemEnt due to the large thread pattern.

So a cook from Audi takes over ///M and shock horror we have the worst build quality ever in an M car (M4 - rattles like a skeleton on a rollercoaster) and now we have this all wheel drive BS.
Fearful we will have a car that handles like an Audi and is a snore fest. And who are these crackpots who want electric motors in the car? Less is ///more! Normally I'd be ordering one of these without a test drive etc as my faith in ///M has always paid off but with the build quality of the ///M4 (and M2) and this AWD BS I'm going to wait until the car has a few miles in the hands of real owners. RIP ///M Neil |

I would start with what @julienjj recommends. First decide what tires you will need. As a general rule you have three options ... All season ? Continental DWS Snow ? Bridgestone WS-80 Ice? Blizzak/alpin/hakkapelita/ Once you've determined what category then you can go tire shopping for sizes. I would say that for sure while being less cost effective, your best option would be to purchase 18 " Wheels that will fit over the M2 calipers and go with an 18" tire that is slightly narrower and taller than OEM ( a narrower tire gives additional traction in snow ) Keep the OEM 19s for spring/summer/fall and keep in mind that moderate weather will KILL snow or ice tires quickly as well as the fact that their performance in the dry is much reduced. You can also slap Winter tires on your stock 19" wheels but if you are going to be storing the summer tires it's probably easier to pick up a set of cheap/knockoff/spare wheels for what you will be saving with the smaller tires in 18 vs 19 along with the extra mount and balance costs each spring and fall. |
