Winter tires and acceleration

Hey guys

I put on my winter tiers F: Michelin 275/35/R20 102w and R: Michelin 285/35/R20 104v basically what BMW recommends. But now when I accelerate between 0 - 70km/h I get DSC on even if I accelerate gently. Any ideas what the hell is going on?

Those tyres are not star rated and as such are not recommended by BMW. That said, they are the correct sizes and should provide sufficient grip.

Are the tyres brand new or do they have a few miles on them now? In full 4WD mode, does it still slip with the TC off?

They will need a 100 miles or so to bed in. The TC is quite sensitive on these cars and tyres have a difficult job with 600HP.

I assume TC interference is only under hard acceleration? If not, I would check both fronts and rears are the same model/tread and been installed correctly etc. I assume they are PA4's if winters?

the PA4s 275 and 285 have different tread patterns. i bought mine in January and had them on until march and didn't have any problems with the TC . gonna put them on again next week since Winter is coming

Don’t waste your money... I recommend Kumho Wintercraft WP72, 275/35/20 all around! They work awesome on our M5s and cost half of Michelin Alpine!

I'm running the same tires, different thread pattern on the fronts and rear and I have a similar experience. Not as bad as you're describing, but TC does come on needlessly at times. I think the front and rears have different traction in different conditions, which leads to TC coming on.

Yeah, how strange is that?
Just put today my brand new PA4 and thought they delivered the wrong tires when I noticed they are different.

Yes, TC lights more often now, but not on straight line acceleration, only under a bit of steering.

However, I expect them to improve with mileage, but don't expect much, winter tires are a compromise for handling

This is interesting. To add a data point, this will be my second season on Pirelli Sottozeros and I have not see the TC light come on during normal driving. I wonder if the different tread patterns for the Michelin between the front and rear are grabbing at slightly different rates and thus triggering the TC.

That will be the reason then. Damn, just ordered a set last week too. Should have gone with the Sottozero's.

I just put on 265/40-19 front and 285/40-19 rear of Michelin PA4 N-Spec.
Narrower front tire, 265 vs. 275, but recommended by BMW.
Same tread pattern all around. It's a strange tank tread look. Never seen anything like it.

However, I can attest, these are the best snow tires I've ever had, and I was a Nokian guy forever.

Haven't had deep snow yet, but had slush and about 5", and cold and I have tried to make the TC light come on to get used to how they react, and can't even make it light up.

Highly recommend.

I have the oem 19" setup also and first time with Michelin snows. Rainy as hell today here and it was harder for me to break traction with the snows today than it was with the factory Pirellis.

I have the Pirelli Sottozeros as well. Same size as the stock 20" Michelin 4S tires.

No problems with traction control.

Drove in several inches of snow covered roads last week and it felt great.

i doubt that since i run the same set up on mine and i don't have a problem with TC , light comes on with hard acceleration form standstill on wet or snow surface never on dry.

I’ve had no issues in freezing or slimy conditions yet on the 275 & 285 20 PA4 setup so far. I’ve seen the TC light in 4wd mode but only when exploring and testing the boundaries..

I've 275 and 285 Michellin's on last week and haven't seen any TC warning yet. They have around 500 miles already and pretty good on freeway at "high" speeds.
