Best laser and radar detector?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Just got a 15 over the speed limit ticket the other day and have been getting way too many close calls with cops. So need to buy a detector. Which one is the best, most cops where I live are motorcycle cops with laser I believe .

Detector won't help with laser if that is truly what they use. A laser jammer can be used but at the end of the day if they tag you with laser it's too late.

I just switched from a valentine one to the radenso pro m and am very happy. Miss the arrows with the v1 but the false alerts were killing me.

I would no matter what fight the ticket. If you have a clean record they may have mercy. Worst case you just have to pay in the end anyway.

Good luck!

Maybe you're tempting fate with your username.

e90alpinem3 is right. If they're using Laser then a detector will not save you. Laser jammers and ruining Waze is your best defense.

One note to keep in mind, the gesture control feature can set off the detector so if you put one in and it goes crazy, that's likely way. You'll have to put some tape over that sensor.

I would fight it , but I feel as if I have no advantage point to fight, to be honest I'm pretty sure I was going faster and he was just being nice. Plus my exhaust sounded like an automatic shotgun with tons of backfire and he was nice not to write an exhaust ticket. Any tips to fight it ?

Has anybody heard the company VEIL , I guess it makes it harder for the laser gun to obtain your speed? Wonder if it's a hoax or somewhat helpful

Never heard of it but my radar detector on my Benz has been great. I turned off the X band so it doesn't go off from random stuff. The cops in CA all use ka and laser. My car has laser shifting. I'm guessing that it's basically just sending the laser in another direction.

I haven't gotten a laser ticket since having it. 8 years And I have seen cops light me up and then just go onto the next car as if nothing ever happened.

It has a box in the front behind the grill and another one on the rear plate and the control is in the dash. Expensive but the best way to do it imo.

Tip number one know cops in the town you got stopped and have one of them drop a dime to the court appointed trooper or magistrate. At least in MA that is who you see for moving violations.

Second tip if you have a clean or at least somewhat clean record admit you were being an idiot driving too fast and it was a "lapse of judgement" promise it will not happen in the future.

Third tip if your driving record sucks and you don't know any cops bring a check and be prepared for your insurance premium to go up!

Hope you can get away with tip 1 or 2!

My kid has my car so I can't check at the moment, but I think it's a Passport CI or something. It's called an integrated radar detector and laser jammer.

Mine is old, I'm sure there is better ones out now but I love mine even 7-8 years later

If the cops there really use primarily laser then you are outta luck on a laser jammer in Cali as they are illegal there. However the Radenso/ALP built in unit is very stealth (detachable face) and you might want to check it out.

https://www.vortexradar.com/2015/11/...-in-your-area/

This forum below has a lot of good info on radar detectors. I would suggest researching which ones are best for your area based on what cops are using.

https://www.rdforum.org/index.php

After researching options, I am now using a Radenso Pro M here in Florida and it has been excellent. Very quiet and works well. We don’t have as much laser here but for that most recommend Anti Laser Priority. I plan on getting one soon. Good luck.

+1 I purchased the Radenso Pro M a few weeks ago and been testing it the last couple of days. I really like the unit as it’s fairly small and fits nicely next to the mirror. I’m trying to hardwire it to the mirror’s 12V power source and just received a 10” MirrorTap. I’m going to use the DIY as posted by AGS. The only problem I’ve encountered is that its just too hot in the morning and then it rains all afternoon and into evening. However, I’m not in a rush and I’ll wire it up soon. So, for the tests, I’m just using the 12V cig adapter it cane with.

If anyone decides to get one, don’t forget to flash it, via the included USB, to ensure you’ve got the latest firmware and red-light camera database. It’s very easy to use/program - overall a nice unit. Although, I did enjoy the arrow indicators on V1 I had many moons ago.

ALP is the beat laser jammer on the market. Had it on my F10 M5, G12, and Hellcat. I've been pulled over for speeding and each time given a warning due to their inability to capture my speed.

They are illegal in some states and are only a fine. I did get a fine once as the office was jammed by me repeatedly. I wasn't paying attention and didn't have my settings setup to shut down after initial jam.

Escort 9500 is pretty much the best, the installed version with radar and laser jammers. Someone's selling second hand one on the member classified.

The Escort 9500 installed system is a good radar detector, but it does not have filtering for modern cars with blind spot detection. The Escort laser protection is not very good at all.

ALP is the only laser protection that successfully handles the most modern guns.

The Radenso and NetRadar are sold as add-ons to the ALP, and both have filtering abilities for BSD.

This! Detectors will only tell you you're getting pulled over with laser. They almost never detect before the cop has your speed. You need ALP.

I am a Motor Cop commonly referred to as a Motor in SoCal and we use LIDAR for speed enforcement. Laser jammers are illegal and my personal recommendations is to stay away from them. Here is the reason why, years ago I visually estimated a vehicle at over 100+ mph I could not get a lock on the vehicle and the vehicle slowed down to the speed limit and I was able to get speed reading on my LIDAR. I conducted a traffic stop and located two laser jammer antenna's in the front of the vehicle between the grill slots. The driver was cited for the visual speed and I reduced it to 90 mph and he was also cited for having a laser jammer installed. I never went to court and a check with our records division showed the driver payed the fine.

In California part of the training for use with both RADAR and LIDAR is being certified in visual speed estimation. So what does that mean, we can give a speeding ticket using visual speed estimation by itself. The courts understand that we can be off by +/- 5 mph.

At 15mph over the limit you are at the top of the tier 1 fine scale. The fine should be around $250 before adding in traffic school if you are eligible (you can only attend traffic school every 18 months). Tier 2 goes from 16 mph to 25 mph and tier 3 is over 25 mph and usually traffic school is not allowed but can be changed by the Traffic Commissioner or Judge.

Now how can you fight it, depending on the roadway a speed survey maybe required. The speed limit is established by the 85th percentile which is referred to by the critical speed limit. The speed survey is valid up to 7 year as long as no changes have been made to the roadway and can be extended to 10 years if the Traffic Engineer does a traffic flow study. All this information can be found in the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices). The speed limit can not be lower then the 50th percentile. If you were on the freeway (I-5, I-15,etc...) no speed survey is required and you were cited for CVC 22349a (max speed over 65) or CVC 22356b (driver over 70 mph) . The CHP have it easy in that regard for those that work on the freeways. I work for a PD in San Diego County and most of our speed violations deal with the basic speed law (CVC 22350). LIDAR and RADAR have to be calibrated every 3 years.

Hopefully this helps.

Excellent information above!

If you receive a traffic citation in California and have some colorable defense, you might consider contesting the matter online through "Trial by Declaration". Many have had success in this regard and I understand that law enforcement officers are not crazy about taking the time necessary to appropriately respond, etc.

Laser or other "Jammers" may also be prohibited by Federal law (especially if they are strong enough to be effective).

Be safe, and good luck with your choices.

Agreed k band now needs to be switched off. It's an older system no doubt (best there was vs best there is in hindsight) , but still detects lasers miles ahead so you get early warning. I assume newer systems have upgraded capabilities.
