Squared Setup

I plan to do 4-5 track days a year in my M5C and was looking at tire options. My two favorite track tires are Michelin Cup 2’s and Nitto NT01’s. Neither manufacturer makes a 275/35/20 for front wheels. The 285/35/20 size is available for the rears so i thought about just running a square setup. Has anyone run 285/35/20 on all 4 corners? Would that screw with the transfer case?

My other thought was to buy a set of the Dinan wheels and run their recommended sizes. But Dinan only recommends Toyo Proxes Sport and I prefer a more track focused tire.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm running the SC2 Michelin in 285/30-20 and 305/30-20 and the ratio of front to rear diameter is very close to the stock 275 to 285 ratio, even though they're an inch shorter in diameter. I do have 10" wide front and 11" wide rear wheels and if I'd done my research better I'd have gone with the 295/30 front for an even closer match to the stock ratio. I don't think the extra .5" in width of the 295 would cause any rubbing in front, but I'm not sure of that. An option for you if you're considering buying wheels anyway.

I think this heavy car should use all the rubber it can fit for track use.

The stock rears are 285/35/20, not 295. That being said, I think you're fine as long as the rear tire has the bigger diameter. I'm currently debating whether I should go 295/30/21 front 305/30/21 rear or 285 front 295 rear.

Thanks for catching my typo. When my 285/30-20 front wears out I'll be trying the 295/30 and hope it doesn't rub.

Yes, I've been running a square set-up in this size for my winter set. Halfway through my second winter on them an no issues whatsoever.

Yeah I would just run 285 front 295 rear but Michelin doesn’t make a 295/35/20 Sport Cup 2 tire. So that is probably why you had to run the 305.

Square setup here for the track. 285/35R20's all around. So far:
R888R's
Michelin Pilot Sport cup 2's

No problems so far.

Were Cup2s faster and longer lasting than R888?
I got a set of AR1s but maybe after CV will stand a chance to try them

The cup2's were longer lasting. Less noisy. I don't know about faster. i think probably not for the first and second time out. The sixth time out? Yes. They were faster the sixth time out.

Now having run Toyo RR's slicks in 285/35r20'a square on the track, this is by far the best tire for the track for this car. Cannot say enough nice things about this tire.
