Actually alot of European manufacturers do testing in Death Valley because it's one of the hottest and driest places on earth. It's the same reason that many US-only bound cars are tested in Scandanavia.

Do you think a turbo 3 would sell well in the states? Turbo diesel, maybe to go after VW sales with the fuel prices going up. I am not a big fan of turbo.

I believe the current 1-Series being produced is an E81. I am hoping that the E82 & E87 are the Coupe and Convertible that are supposedly coming to the US. |

I think it will do well here because American's are obssessed with horsepower. I do think it will become a niche vehicle in the future however, because once the M3 is intoduced (in sedan form as well) I think most people would prefer, like me and you, a powerful normally aspirated engine over a turbocharged engine. Many people don't care for the sudden, and sometimes unpredictable power delivery of a turbocharged engine. The 335 will be cheaper though!

I will opt for the 335i turbo if it is available and reasonably priced (+5k over 330i), and the USA does not get diesel engines, specifically for the touring. Both the 325 and 330 are superb, but the propect of a more radical car upping the adrenaline is most tempting. The 335i will not be a cheap horsepower kick, but more likely a complete BMW package with appropriately tuned brakes and suspension. One hopes that AG will adhere to "form follows function" with the styling.

most of them wont have the $$$$. STi or evo would be a better deal for them. 31k or 45k thats a lot of $$$ for mods. I think that is the way they will see it.

I agree with scottz5. The market for the 335i is not the STi or evo buyer, but the AMG or S4 types. The two-stage turbo is not likely to suffer the spool lag or off-on boost issues of earlier turbos. I drove a 2002 turbo a long time ago, and, while it was definitely more difficult to modulate power in a drift, once you got used to it, going back to a normally aspirated tii was a drag. I imagine the problem for BMW AG is reliability and sufficient numbers to justify the new model. But for me, I cannot get an M3 (4 doors and $ are big issues), so the 335i will hopefully be the perfect compromise. From what I have seen, the M3 will be a coupe-based model, so the turbo could fill the 4-door niche.

I used to live up there (Eastern Sierras, Mammoth and Owens Valley) and they test all sorts of cars out there. Death Valley is close by, and it gets hot up there and lots of great (empty) roads to drive fast on. I don't know if they test non US Spec cars regularly, but it makes sense to do so, even if they are not for the US market.
I know that Bentley used to do a lot of testing in Saudi Arabia, but they do less of that now due to the "political" situation over there. On a side note, I was flying back from Vegas to Santa Barbara last weekend and I noticed the Honda test track in Cantil near California City off Hwy 14. They have a 7.5 mile oval out there. I sure wish I could spend an hour or two on that track for a top speed run! |

i dont know if this has been said yet or not...but i think the turbo would be great cause then it would be pretty much right at par with the Audi S4...
my brother just got a 2006 S4..and i got a E90 330i...but if i could have gotten an E90 turbo...or M3 sedan....that would have been amazing... ps...my 330...might be a little bit slower than the S4....but it is WAY nicer all the way around...and he payed like 15 grand (Canadian) more than me!...thats too much money for a few ticks on the stopwatch

This is pure dreaming... but maybe the upcoming 335i turbo is meant to bridge the gap between a super track oriented upcoming M3 and the current 330i. It makes perfect sense to me. If the M3 is aimed more in the direction of a track star meant to compete with say a 911 turbo or even gt3 it would make sense to have a faster 3 series in the mix. And when you think about it... how much faster can cars get before the average joe cant handle them safely on public roads? Personally i think we've met the limit lol. So the 335i meets the criteria of a sports car while still being a daily driver that has a gentler ride and perhaps a more luxury oriented interior than the upcoming M3, which i hope will be considerably lighter and less luxury oriented with a lot more horsepower lol. Now you can all think im retarded... and i know one of your come backs will be "the M3 is about being luxury oriented and fast... and usable" but think about it.... every M3 has had its own personallity and im just thinking outside the box lol. However i do agree that this would ruin BMW's plans to make a possible CSL but it didnt sell well anyway and never came to the states.
Well thats what im hopin for... the 335i should be pretty sweet either way and if i had the money id totally buy one. The upcoming M3 sounds awesome... but money is always the biggest issue. |

I agree with Raikkonen....California is a great testing ground (especially in the summer heat) and it's in one of BMW's biggest markets.....so they get to test the cars and mingle with the American staff and designers. It doesn't mean they will sell them here.
I won't expect any particular derivative of the 3 until the official announcement. If BMW could get a 3 series diesel into California they would sell like hotcakes...there must be thousands of people that would like the fuel economy close to a Prius in a BMW package.

sweeeeeet. well have you guys thought that maybe this may be parallel with how the 328 upgraded to a 330 wheres maybe this will be the 330 to a 335? how i see it is that the 330 now will be the standard model where the 325 will forever disappear and the 335 will be the higher model replacing the 330.
