What would you do in this situation?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I placed my order back in July for a F90 with Rhodonite Silver as my color choice, never having seen the color in person, and with the request that the dealer obtain a color paint sample or inform me of a local vehicle in that color prior to the lock date when changes could not be made. Despite multiple requests since then, no paint sample. Yesterday, based on posts here suggesting that some build dates were being pushed back, I inquired about an update, and he informed me that it locked in 2 weeks ago, it was scheduled for production 4 weeks earlier than he first told me, and that changes were not permissible any longer. Only after I informed him that I was extremely annoyed by the dealership's lack of follow up and information, did he locate a M550i in Rhodonite that I could see. I found that car and was not at all impressed with the color.

Now I'm faced with a series of sub-optimal choices. I had planned to sell my M4 on my own to perhaps obtain maximum dollars for it, but if I do that now, I could be without a vehicle if I find I don't like the car color when it arrives. If I wait, like the car, and then have to trade it at the time of purchase, I'm looking at losing as much as $4-5K in the deal.

Should I negate the purchase now, wait until it's on his lot and get screwed on the trade, or ask for a better deal up front?

If you think you can sell the M4, do it. If that ends up causing you to be without a car for a while, renting a basic car by the month is actually pretty cheap.

If you don't like the color, I am sure you can find the exact combo you want sitting on a dealer lot. The CP cars are hitting dealers and inventory will start to build up. Or, place another order for exactly what you want. You are not obligated to buy the rhodonite car even though you ordered it.

I've never seen rhodonite in person but it does look like one of the most boring silver colors out there.

I saw it in person and was disappointed. It's very light and shows no metallic flake. I've seen all the M5 colors, and the ones I like are: Black Sapphire, Marina Bay Blue, Azurite Black, and Champagne Quartz.

How about you wait until you get the F90 you want in your driveway and then sell the M4?

Hands down, negate the purchase now!! You should not have to settle at the fault of the dealer, and not be ecstatic like all of us have been once we took delivery. Cancel the car and order the color you want. I actually changed mine on the fly. I originally ordered DG (which is a nice color as well), but fell in love w/ SG after I took a trip to the dealer, and saw an SG paint sample on the wall. Don't settle!!!

Oh I love the US market, here in Taiwan you can't change or cancel your order once you placed it.

Same story in Brazil. And if you didn't like it when the car arrives, your initial money signed in gets held up, until some random lunatic pays 200k usd for a M5.

Half year ago Porsche distributor in Taiwan got a customer's order wrong (missed an option, it was on the contract but when the car arrived it didn't have it) but still tried to force the guy take the car by withholding the 50% deposit, the guy was so upset he drove his other Porsche straight into the dealership, luckily nobody was hurt.

There is no canceling the order- it's gone past the so-called red date after which changes cannot be made. The dealer has told me that I will be let out of the deal, but then I'm back to waiting for the exact color and options combo I want- a minimum of another 4 months. Man, if I ran my business like they do... I'm thinking wait and keep searching dealers' inventory. The M5's are starting to build up on dealers' lots.

Do not take delivery of a car you do not want, period. My last 3 M cars were silver and I refused to pay a premium for Rhonodite silver. I ordered Donnington and it looks much better in person then what you see online.

Just place another order for the one you want. I did the same thing on a M550 order. Changed my mind on color options after seeing Carbon Black in person...wanted to switch to that color, but the order had locked into production. My dealer said no problem, secured another allocation and did another build. Pushed back delivery about a month but I'm getting the car I like.

As for the M5 colors, Singapore Gray is my favorite...

Totally understandable LOL. Here in Brazil, Porsche, BMW and Mercedes ask for 20 to 40% up front. The Ferrari and Lambo ditributor asks for the full 100% upfront. It is insane, and people still submit to buying the car in this conditions.

Funny story is that there was a guy in recent years that bought an M3, (ordered it), and it turned out that BMW sent him the wrong car here to Brazil. Instead of sending a Tanzanite Blue fully specced DKG M3 F80, they sent a Manual with no options in the same colour. As it turned out the car owner took the car and then flipped it with 20k usd.

Just by posting here, I can tell that you'll have buyer's remorse if you "settle" for a color you don't 100% love. Just wait it out, in the grand scheme, a few more months won't matter.

Yes, good advice, but the anticipation of ownership- especially after having driven a new M5- takes on an almost adolescent level of excitement. I will wait for the car, hopefully sell my M4 before, and see if I like the Rhodonite. I won't compromise on a $117,000 vehicle, but I'm not excited about another 4 month wait. Hell, I'll just find one on a dealer's lot.

Really?! I can understand once in production, but I was able to change mine before received a production number. You have one yet?

No I'm not buying the F90, I have dropped 300k on my F10 M5 in 2016, and another 300k on Tesla P100D in 2017, 600k for two cars in 3 years, I'm forbidden by my wife to buy another car for the foreseeable future.
