I was thinking about that earlier today... all of the people on here 5 years ago had declared that BMW M had lost it's way ... . so I was thinking and wondering when a little recognition from those that felt that way would occur..

Good driver from Sport Auto.
Hope next time they test cars without the ceramic brake option, we know how much "better" they are but also how seriously pricey they are to replace. Personally i would never order any kind of car with that option, standard steels are fine. Secondly, is it me or is the microphone placed in a bad area, because it sounds really muted. |

F10 M5 CP did 295km/h on the Dottinger Hohe straight but from the video it seems like the F90 didn't reach 290km/h. SA did mention they felt the F10 M5 CP they got was particularly powerful....Because it dynoed nearly 650PS. This is also why I am eager for the AutoBild Sportscar's test because they do 0-300km runs (SA does not do this test). I would like to know how fast the F90 does from 200km-300km. |

SA does not mod the cars to get better times. They test with whatever the manufacturer provided them with. In this case it should be either Pirelli or Michelin but I am guessing Pirelli since it looks like that's the tire most European spec. M5 got.

Hard to believe they use stock rubber and it can achieve those times - given how heavy the car is. I'd be very interested to see some details around this, given all the inside info that's out there about manufacturers using borderline race tires, special compound brake pads, etc when setting an "official" lap. These guys are independent, but it's a question of durability and safety.
The stock brake pads (gray iron rotor) and fluid cannot make it through a full 10/10ths lap - maybe the ceramic set-up can survive but the fluid would boil. Does the magazine state how the car is prepped? I'd bet they maybe have Michelin SC2 tires on it and racing fluid, as minimum track prep |

Wow only 11sec behind M4 GTS, which was on R-compound Cup 2s. Assuming M5 was on stock street tires, the difference should be even smaller when running on the same tires.

SA's time on the CS was 7:42, so maybe it's safe to say the M5 is faster

Factory time will always be faster because they have all the time in the world to calibrate settings for the car, chose optimal day to test, and drive multiple laps and pick the best time. SA as I have mentioned before, only does two laps, one warm up and one timed lap. It looks like BMW won't give a time for the M5 but I think low 30s is pretty much given. |

Random thoughts:
Impressive drive and performance but difficult to say who is really better as conditions vary day to day and affect times. Back to back tests are more accurate but never practical and even then you have variations.
I wish they would make the primary viewing angle the road view and the driver view the secondary one. Did they do a test for the AMG 63s saloon (sedan)? What did it do? |
