US citizens have the gun as their personal protection but actually in the car it's your seatbelt.

It was a bit of sarcasm..... my bad.
No worries - as a lifelong American I understood your sarcasm and don't disagree with it either. 2020 is truly a moment of truth for Americans - hope we don't F*ck it up...
Or at least don't F*ck it more than we already have...
My foregoing rant aside - my prayers to the victim and his families - we may not agree with the driver's actions but it is still a tragedy nonetheless.

Who knows what caused the accident.....that being said, the bald rear tires is bad news.

About 3-4 years ago I still had my M6 GC (RWD) and I ate through those rear tires pretty quick on that car. I had it in for a service appointment and they mentioned the rear tires were about bald and they needed replacing. Being a cheap ass, I told them I would get them myself and make an appointment in a few weeks (because the dealer always charges way more for tires than you can get them online for).

Well, I was driving home a few nights later on the Interstate (70MPH speed limit) in a pretty heavy rain storm. I was probably going 70 and went up to 80.....suddenly, the back end started hydroplaning and I literally did 3-4 full circles while hydroplaning at 80 MPH. I was VERY lucky in that absolutely no one was around me....I would bet the closest car had to be a solid half-mile behind (and it was maybe 10pm....so a bit abnormal). I basically came to a stop on the right side median and not only didn't hit anyone but somehow didn't crash into the center median and literally the car didn't have a scratch. Who knows what would have happened had another car or a semi or both been around when this happened. Stupid me wasn't wearing a seatbelt, either.

Needless to say, I took side roads to get home and couldn't even go over 40 without feeling the rear end want to break away again. In other words, with bald tires and wet pavement...you don't need to be going fast. These are heavy cars. It's quite surreal to experience hydroplaning in circles and it feels like you aren't going that fast round and round.....

Condolences to the family. I understand both arguments, but most young adults that age (especially males) have made mistakes that could have easily led to similar results if it wasn't for sheer luck.

I know I'm guilty of that myself. I hope some good can come out of this tragedy (maybe some will learn a few valuable lessons).

on a side note, how would a 24 year old get insurance on an M car? at least here in AUS, you need to be above 30 to be able to get insurance and with some providers its 40 or above.
Wait really that's a pretty crazy policy, never seen something like that before. Pretty sure in NA age is not restrictive. The car could just be insured/registered to the guy's parents as well or could be his own.
His age, the original price of the vehicle and the area he lived in tells me all I need to know; his parents bought him the car and he wasn't mature enough to handle the excessive amount of power.

I'm sorry to hear about the incident but this scenario is not really unique, it happens more often than what hit the news.

Funny enough, it's mostly involves a BMW.. Go figure 🤷🏻
I don't think being young with a nice car means your parents bought it for you. My first car was a C300 at 18 and I got a C63 at 21. Someone people start working at a young age and some have different priorities where they can dump money into a car whereas others can't.
A $100,000+ car works out to about $2,000 a month, plus NYC auto insurance for a 24 year old is like another $800 per month.

Yea, I'm not saying he couldn't of been a unique case that actually bought it himself but if I had to make an educated guess, based on my personal experience, my money is on that his parents helped him a smidget..
Typical "Daddy's BMW".

And that's hilarious btw. $2800 on an M5

Oddly it appears he has winter wheels on. Not sure about the tires and its possible he is running summer tires on winter wheels. Again just sad and unnecessary. As an owner of several very high powered BMWs we treat them with respect and reverence like any automobile in that when you have disregard for common sense and the law either you and/or someone else can get killed.

Tldr:WEAR YOUR FING SEATBELT!!
That can't be true.
Yea it is, it's because the care doesn't know where you are in the car at the time of impact so an airbag could potentially cause more damage.

Maybe not every car works that way but most do.

UGH...I wasn't going to comment but...

First, we've all done things that, if we are honest, we would say that we were "lucky something bad didn't happen" in a situation. And, from my perspective, age has nothing to do with these situations. It may have happened at 24, at 18, or at 44.

Second, what I would hope that we all take from this is how fragile life is and that the decisions we make can have such tragic outcomes.

So, if we are to learn anything from this tragic story we need to learn to wear our seatbelts, make sure we use our heads and be so cautious with how we drive.

What a tragic story!

I'm not familiar with the exact circumstances here however, even with a seatbelt and a fairly intact cabin, occupants can die. This type of fatality is caused by sudden deceleration, i.e. internal organs moving against your skeleton. This is a further reason why modern cars feature crumple zones, serving to raise deceleration time by precious milliseconds however the benefit obviously dimishes with vehicle speed.

IMO it's very bad taste for this forum to feature the accident pictures. It's just rubbing salt on the family's pain. Mods should move this thread and the featured item offline.

So do you think his family now is reading our forum, right?

I think it's good to show to our forum members what could happen if you don't obey traffic laws, myself included.

Yes they could. Or their friends could.

I think the picture on the featured page and the title heading crosses the line.

I'm sure they were exposed to it all, from the post article, that reached millions of readers, compared to our humble forum.....

100% correct!!! I'm 50 and appalled by this culture of today. The culture of today has emasculated the men and ruined the country. I grew up in a God fearing, country loving, war veterans of WW2 and Nam household. Where the man was put on a pedestal and respected as the boss of the home and in society. Especially, the wimpy kids of today (I'd say 30s on down), pale in comparison to us in the 70s, 80s and 90s. My son is turning 13 and he's already a great young man, that I molded him into. He knows how to shoot, fish, excels in tough sports such as "contact" football and lacrosse, car lover, etc. Sorry about the ramble, just so frustrated w/ the America of today.....

HAHAH, i'm laughing right now. I'm 29. I'm disgusted by a vast majority of humans in similar age, or younger than me. I somehow missed the dumb train, thank god.

Funny, as i'm writing this, im texting a close friend of mine in medical school. They are spending 3 hours today learning about LGBTQ. IN MEDICAL SCHOOL. This is where we are as a country right now. Spending 250k to learn about BULLSHIT. end rant as well. And rip to the young fellow we lost.

God bless you son! Must have had a Father like mine and that I am to my son. I also grew up in the same house as my WW2 vet Grandfather from the Bx, who was tough as fn nails! Wasn't abusive, just very tough in general and stern, loved him to death. It's weak parenting that allows these kids to develop this way.

U can't have a gun in New York unless ur a cop or super high authority for the most part. This isn't Texas man. Calm down

Either way sad to here about this. one thing it does do is remind you to drive safe, keep your tires in check and don't floor it in the rain..
