Best single exercise machine for a home
I moved into a new house with a spare bedroom on the first floor. It's big enough to hold my home office gear in only half the room. The remaining space (14' x 7') will be empty.
I'm thinking of putting an exercise machine in there. I could use it to fit in 20-30 minutes of exercise when I have free time. If I only have one room for one piece of equipment, what should I get? Treadmill. This just seems dumb. Where I live it's never to hot or too cold to go outside and run. Then again, it's nice to jog while watching a movie on my tablet. Elliptical trainer. This seems like the best option for me. I get a similar workout to a treadmill (something like here) while moving in a slightly different manner. Rowing machine. I've never had one of these, but it seems like a good all-body cardio workout. Weight bench and weights. I (used to) enjoy weightlifting. But I don't know how my floor would react if I accidentally drop hundreds of pounds of barbell on it. Bowflex/Nordictrac multi-use device. These seem horribly gimmicky and not very useful. Other? I'm open to your suggestion. Last edited by Kanertau; 02-18-2020 at 09:31 AM.. |

I had acquired quite a bit of equipment for a home gym, free weights up to 100lbs, treadmill, bike etc...
Bought a gym membership for $220 and road bike... Free weights, dumbbells, gives you versatility to do anything. The rest of it will gather dust... |

I think I'd go treadmill honestly. You can do a lot of different things on it. It's limited to your imagination. Lunges, sprints, running, walking, incline, you can mix in some free weights. Elliptical you're pretty limited in what you can do. Same with the rower. Not saying rowing isn't a great workout, but hell you said it yourself you like to watch shit on your tablet. Little difficult on a rower. Last thing you want is another excuse not to workout.
My mom built a laptop stand for her elliptical, so even if shes just perusing the web she can stay active. So the same can go for a treadmill you have the opportunity to be productive in more manors then one. Just my 2cents |

Concept 2 or even an Airdyne/Assualt Bike and throw in some adjustable dumbells. I think youd be pretty solid there without going full bore home gym.
But we all know thats where itll end up going haha.

for inside - an olympic bar and 17.75" diameter 10 and 25 pound plates. Cleans and snatches and their components are fun, time goes by quickly, and it's full body. Sometimes I just do power snatches from my shins with an empty bar for ten-minutes and it's exhausting. Maybe just a rubber or wooden section floor covering for stability and weight placement.

Concept 2 rower. Will kick your ass in no time. All body work out. I need to get back on mine and row far more often. Stands on end and takes up about a box about 2.5 x 3 when you are done.

We have a treadmill, elliptical, Peloton bike, rower and full power rack for power lifting. They all get used, but I have my favorites and my wife has hers. She likes the treadmill, elliptical and bike and uses all 3 about the same. Keeps her from getting bored. I like the rower but only to warm up for the powerlifting.
I think if we had to pick one, it would be the bike. My wife hates the rower and I like the bike out of the other three. I will never give up my free weights but with only 14' x 7', it will be tight to fit a proper rack in there. |

Countless studies have shown: a treadmill holds the largest quantity of hanging clothes that don't fit in the closet.
For that space, I think I'd get one of the multi-function cable machines. I'll snap a pic of the one we have at work. Not sure how much $$$ though. |

You could get "Tonal" and will take care of most of your light weight routines and will take up no space at all..fits on standard studs, requires 7' of width when arms fully extended and min 7' ceiling..when compared to annual cost of two memberships it was a no brainer for us as we wanted home gym and had a small spare room that is 9X13.. requires membership for first year but after you can cancel.. (i mostly use custom programs but my wife likes the guided workouts which is perfect for her).. also you can add additional cable accessories such as V Handle, Rotating Bar, V-Shaped Bar..

I have a Concept2. I'm ashamed to say I use it daily to sit on while I'm putting on my shoes for riding the bike.
Rowing is an excellent workout, but it's boring as hell. I've been spoiled by Zwift.

Zwift should be more like grand theft auto so you can shank other riders and run them into a parked car collect hoes to get more points.

OP ... noticed you also posted the same in the Concept2 forum.
Given your space constraints my recommendation would be a Concept 2 rower, Iron Masters dumbbell set and a bench which inclines / declines.

I have a cage rack with pullies and a smith machine and squat rack all in one - it is a great machine.
But My buddy has a versaclimber and he is a MONSTER. They are expensive, but I have though about getting one several times. When I use his I am sore ALL over. It amazes me haw great he looks from just this machine. But he gets after it - like always trying to beat his records and all that and drenched in sweat when he is done. I'm just scared it will be another piece I will give up on collecting dust - only this one would cost more than my others combined! LOL
