Resale values- fell out of bed??
Don’t know what happened but from I see the resale values on F90’s have just collapsed. From best I can tell, my 2018 is about $20-22k in the hole, neg equity, on a 3 year lease, a little over 1 year in. That’s after a huge discount ($117k MSRP, cap cost after rebates around $102k, in 2018). Of course I know these aren’t investments and won’t appreciate but after many many many cars and leases I’ve never seen it this bad, except for my Maserati back in ‘09. Spoke to my local dealer manager who told me a friend of his is $30k in the hole on his M5. Did they convert to the metric system lol or an alternate currency? Kidding of course but wow! Still a great vehicle all in all.

I noticed the same thing the other day. 18s are cheap! The E63s seem to be holding value much better. Its hard to find one of those for under 90k. Almost all of the M5s, even with 3k miles, are low 80s. I'm just glad I leased...

Historically BMW has depreciated fairly hard. My 16 BMW 750i which is well optioned was $110K 4 years ago. Today I'd be lucky to get $40K for it. I just saw a 15 M5 the other day go for $40k with low miles. I refuse to finance BMW because of it after financing my F1p0 M5 and taking a huge loss. I leased two cars after that and then scored a deal on my CPO 750i back in July and now it's trading in for low 30s. Quite sad. Rather get a killer deal on a lease and turn it in 3 years later.
I saw a 19 760i at the local dealer last week with a $179K MSRP selling for under $100k. Insane.

The first day this car came out... it was soft as goose shit.
The best day of a BMW lease is the first day....... and the last.

In the UK the lease tends to cover the depreciation. Out of interest, in the US who covers the loss? From the above, it would seem your lease options don't even cover the depreciation?

When Bmw wants to offload these late last year jacking up residuals to unheard 60 percent and discounting like crazy anyone before is going to lose hard.
Hope you leased and can tell you you won’t be able to get out early unless eating a pile of negative equity |

Swap-a-lease might be the only way to go. I was just kicking tires for grins and was offered $65k for my '19 with 14k miles on it. WOW

I thought that values were soft as well and tried nationwide very diligently to find a '19 M5C in Black that was well-optioned (loaded) and low miles for anywhere in the $80ks or low $90ks and no luck (only IRATE sellers). Same for a good lease deal on the same car. Weird cars, stripped cars, base cars, etc., those were available, new, used or for lease.
A deal is only a deal, if it is on what you want. I gave up after months and purchased a 2020 M5C w/spec. I like on the ground at around 8% off MSRP, plus BMW CCA rebate. The 10kmi/36mo. Lease on that car at base mf was going to be $1,870/mo with CA Taxes--not attractive, and arguably baking in depreciation. Not worried about the depreciation, etc. at this point. Great car and plan to keep it for at least a few years, and can sell it when I am ready. |

Car Max offer
Yesterday (1/27/20) I stopped by Car Max to see what they would offer me for my 2018 M5 with 5,906 miles. I purchased the M5 new in August of 2018 and it is my weekend / days off from work vehicle. It had an MSRP of $124,335. They offered me $75,000. So after 1.5 years of ownership the vehicle has depreciated $49,335 (around 40 % of MSRP) pre-tax and fees. I did a purchase and I received a $14,000 discount with incentives / rebates (BMW & BMW CCA) at the time of purchase.
I am contemplating transitioning to a 2020 Porsche 911 S but I may just keep the F90. It has to be one of the worst vehicles I have owned for holding its value. My 2008 Tacoma double cab off-road 4X4 with 83,000 miles that I purchased new in 2008 for $26,600 (MSRP around $32,000) is holding its value well. While looking at SUV's for the wife at a local Toyota dealership they offered me $17,000 for my 11 year old truck at the time (Aug of 2019). Last edited by Egrunt; 01-28-2020 at 07:52 AM.. |

I found a 2018 for $68k with 10,000 miles, black on black and no accidents. The dealer is willing to let it go for $67000 plus tax. It looks like a solid deal for a 2018 M5. I wasn’t looking at M5’s but now I’m actually thinking about trading my M2C for it.

Picked up my '19 with 1050 miles for 81K before taxes ($4000 off asking price). Some guy barely drove it and traded in for SUV since he had a child. It was the exact color I wanted with full black merino leather and every option except for the BW sound system so not too bad of a deal for a near brand new vehicle which didn't even have it's first oil change yet.
If you have the patience I definitely recommend waiting til the right used one comes along and save your self a nice chunk of change. I've spent the savings on Akra Evo exhaust, Keller DP+MP, Eventuri Intake, DME S2 Tune, Pur 4our 21x10 + 21x11 wheels, Michelin PS4S 295/35 + 305/35, full RW Carbon aero kit and still have some leftover to pay annual insurance, it's a win win! |

I expect mine to be worth less than a third of its retail cost at 4 years old, by which time it’ll be out of warranty (extended) so I’ll be handing the keys back. In the meantime, I’m going to enjoy it. I can’t imagine owning a car as complicated as this outside a warranty but it might work for some.
