IND | Fall Line Motorsports F90 M5 Oil Cooler Guard

The F90 M5 cars are incredibly well sorted from a cooling standpoint. Even in a road course environment with extremely high ambient temperatures, the F90 engine tends to operate beautifully, with consistent oil and water temperatures. BMW M invested a great deal of time, money, and effort into designing a cooling system that worked in nearly every condition.

Although excellent ducting, good core design, strong fans, and other factors all play in to how well a cooling system works, there is one ultimate factor which cannot be circumvented- you must have enough heat exchanger surface area, and you must have enough heat exchangers. When examining the front of an M5 then, we see the hard work of the M engineers in packaging the various cooling components of the car. Everything had to be accounted for, and given ample space, surface area, and ducting.

Unfortunately, this leaves the S63 engine’s oil cooler precariously exposed. A direct impact to the oil cooler can have catastrophic effects, draining the S63 of all of its oil in seconds, a fact that more than a handful M5 owners have had to learn in a painfully direct way.

Having seen that this was a critical need for the F90 M5 cars, IND worked with Fall Line Motorsports to develop a robust oil cooler guard, specifically designed to shield the S63’s oil cooler from large road debris and prevent disaster.

The new Fall Line Motorsports oil cooler guards will be constructed from thick stainless steel plate, and will fasten directly to existing frame members on the F90 M5 cars, spreading any impact across strong structural components. Special care was taken to ensure that the opening in the oil cooler guard matched the shape and size of the existing BMW oil cooler air outlet, ensuring that proper air flow is maintained. Installation is straightforward and uses all existing mounting locations, and also retains the factory BMW plastic shield and associated outlet ducting.

Installation hardware is included.

PM'ed.

Those pictures are from the bottom, where hot air exits.
It is protecting the oil cooler from incoming debris from the front on the car.
So, you won't see any of the stripes from the top.

I forgot to take some pictures of Greer and Quickburn7 cars.
They had a close call, luckily the oil cooler guard the one who take the hit.

I find this classless. How can you do this on IND's post?
start a new thread of your own if you are going to offer their parts for sale.

Sorry forum Police.

First of all, this product is made by Fall Line Motorsports. IND is the distributor and I am an installer.

Secondly, I am helping others to understand how it actually work and function, not selling it.

OP doesn't mind about it since it also benefit them.

Am I guilty? "Officer"???

Hey guys,

I have a lift at home and put my M5 up since I plan on using another car the next few weeks. Here is a picture of the oil cooler guard after 6 months of daily driving. I abuse my daily so this is very bad but just want you to see how much abuse the guard takes to protect the oil cooler. I might have been on engine 6 at this point without it!

Wow, crazy amount of debris that you are facing in daily basis.

Has BMW addressed this issue for 2020 models? What is their rationale for not having this on the factory cars?

Zero issues with warranty since the oil guard does not alter any emissions items. Also I see that you are local. I've taken the iND M5 to Patrick and MW service with no problems.

I appreciate the pictures. I have been contemplating installing one of these on my F90. Looking at your pictures the oil cooler guard sits lower then the valance panels located around the oil cooler. In my opinion the marks on the outer surface of the oil cooler look like scrapes where the cooler has made contact when the elevation of the roadway has changed or coming in and out of a driveway. The elevation of the roadway that I talk about is when the roadway has a dip at an intersection of two adjoining roadways.

Living in SOCAL and having a stock F90 I sometimes have to cross some of the aggressive dip intersections on an angle to keep the front lower bumper from making contact with the roadway.

Definitely a worthwhile upgrade. You can see that the factory oil cooler is not very recessed compared to the front bumper and hence, incredibly prone to impact (however serious) on these road undulations you speak of, even at stock ride height.

Our F90's oil cooler guard looked to be in similar shape as the photos above, so we were eternally grateful to have run one of these Fall-Line oil cooler guards from the onset. You just never know what crazy road debris will pop up out of nowhere.

How has the guard and the oil cooler held up with more time? Any issues with damage through the spaces in the guard?
