I will test it again - perhaps still having key in my pocket could have contributed - not quite sure.
After another test yesterday, I’ve concluded that it seems to be working fine.

When plugging in the tap connections to the back of the harness, is it better to plug the red before the black or does it not make a difference?

Ah I see you found the thread I was talking about! It didn't make a difference for me. I wrestled with getting one wire in, and the other would fall out. It was a delicate act that my not-so-delicate fingers had to manage.

Excellent thread excellent thread!

A few questions if you do not mind:

1. I have a Valentine 1 Detector. Is it worth switching Detectors or not? I do not want to install all different types of grill and tail mounted apparatus on the car – just one rear view mirror mount. So should I keep the Valentine 1 or dump it? The Valentine 1 is a few years old.

2. My front windshield has light window tint on it. Will this prevent the operation of the Radar detector, whether Valentine 1 or otherwise? The window tint did not in any way impair the operation of my Valentine 1 on any of several previous cars.

3. My car is a 2020 M5 Competition and has Executive Package, Driver's Assistance, etc. Which specific portion of the Radar Detector do I need to tape over? And will this impair the operation of the Radar Detector or of the Car?

Thank you very much for your efforts!

#1 - I wouldn't. If you go the the Valentine1 website you can enter the serial # of your unit and see if it's eligible for an upgrade. If it is you trade for a new one for a reduced price.

#2 - Hard to say. The tinted area at the top of the windshield interfered with the laser detector on my unit.

#3 - to defeat the gesture control from setting off the rear facing laser detector I put a small piece of black electrical tape over the sensor. Look at post #48 in this thread - the red circle in the center of the unit is the laser detector sensor. I also taped over the gesture control sensors in the overhead console of the car. You'll have to search for that location in other threads as there are no pictures of it in this one.

Good luck with the install!

Just received my Escort MAX 360c, might try out this setup so thanks for the write up!

Do you guys do this purely for a cleaner look or is it to hide the radar detector to be more discreet?

Reason I ask is because where I live radar detectors are legally allowed so no one bothers to hide them.

Just ordered the harness from Amazon with 1 day delivery so I can install my V1 this weekend. Thanks for the write up OP! I really wasn't looking forward to having a wire running down the windshield and dash!

Cleaner install, no cords running across/over the dash. Detectors are legal in NJ also.

Took me 30 mins and looks great without any cables running down the dash.

Meh, I just sold my Valentine One (and I had the most updated version). Just too many damn false alerts in my M550i.....couldn't trust it anymore. Not only that, my M5 I just bought has gesture control....and I'm just not rigging some electrical tape to cover something in a $115k car.

I just bought a Uniden R7 which doesn't have the issue with gesture control (and is rated better than the V1 anyways).

V1 gave me many good years, though.....was very happy with it and had it for 15 years or so. Just too much damn technology now interfering...

My situation is similar. V1 is great with the app but Honda CR-V's started setting it off and they are now everywhere. I'll be interested to see how you like the R7 and if its a bit chatty as well. I use a Radenso Pro M for now and its great.

So I did this install yesterday with my Uniden R7. Couple things to add to what has already been discussed.

I found the harness was about impossible to get to without removing all 3 covers. There is very little to no slack with the wiring harness....so you really can't pull it out to get more room to work with. I used a credit card to pry apart the second cover (middle one).....worked good and did not scratch the plastic. The last cover is really easy to remove....it is hooked in as opposed to snapped/clipped in.

I noticed a little rattle from up there today....I assume from the wire hitting the first plastic cover. I am going to see if that disappears or I might have to go back in and put something around the wire to insulate it (so it doesn't rattle).

I had to go back and add some felt to stop rattling. Seemed to have worked. And still very happy with the R7 although the mute button was poorly designed. It should have been on the front of the unit like the R3. I've gotten used to it, but still a tad annoying.

Attempt 1 has been taken yesterday to install the Escort. Impossible to take out the 1st plastic cover. Taken one side (driver side) but the passenger side is IMPOSSIBLE to take out. Obviously I can yank it out but seems like the 1st big clip will break off if I do so just put it back nicely and gave up =/

Yes, I ended just using some electrical tape and taping the wire to the plastic part at the top....I assume that will take care of it.

Hi. I appreciate this thread. Very helpful.

Question. I've owned many vehicles over the past years and have had detectors in all of them. I've also had a dashcam in many.

I've used both the mirror tap method and running the hardwire kit along the headliner against the windshield, down the A pillar and into the fuse box without trouble. That's how I had it in my 911, while I'm currently using the mirror tap for my Uniden R7 in my 19 Raptor.

Is it more difficult to do the fuse box on a BMW? Where is the fuse box located? Are there any threads here showing that along with where the ground is?

Thank you all.

Thanks for this thread. Was able to do this for my radenso pro that just came in today. Needle drivers were very useful, and a plastic trim tool made the job a lot easier than just trying to pull the pieces off. The hardest part by far for me was putting the trim pieces back on.

Great threa! This was not an easy job for me, definitely remove all trim pieces for better access to reconnect the plug. As another poster mentioned, push the tap all the way down into the plug. You shouldn’t see any metal. I routed through the mirror trim vent, looks clean.

*I have an R3 and tried the R7 this week. The R7 is nice but it’s way too big, especially hanging under the mirror.

Super Major Thanks for this. One of the most helpful threads ive ever come across. Because what a pain in the ass that is! The area is so tight. Its funny though I feel like everyone had a different kind of issue. For me getting the taps all the way in was the easiest part of the whole process. It was almost impossible getting the harness to move so that i could get the taps in. I tried unplugging the harness and couldn't get it unplugged no matter what I did. I also cant seem to get the big top piece to click back in flush. Theres a thin gap between that piece and the second collar piece and I cant seem to figure out where its not clicking. I might have to order new trim pieces and reinstall with fresh pieces.
