The IND (Fall Line) guard requires some cutting. The Turner Motorsports version is plug and play (the one I decided to use). Both offer decent protection but I believe the Fall Line guard is a little more rigid based on materials used.

Thanks! I didn't realize there was a difference.

Weird thing is, on the F10 M5 the cooler is basically in the same spot.

If anyone installs one of those guards themselves, please post up about how difficult it was. I'm dangerous with tools in my hands sometimes and not sure I want to tackle it myself, but also don't want to pay a mechanic a bunch of cash to do it if it's relatively easy.

This works.

$70.00

The open area is just nuts to begin with. Yes, great air flow, but a screen of some kind ( 1 inch openings?) has got to add enough protection and not restrict air flow that much? If you are 'racing" with your M5, the remove your shield.

When I read these posts I just shake my head. Why not include some top hood vents or hell leave the hood off for "maximum" cooling. Such BS.

Great job BMW engineering.

Mike

Would installing the oil cooler guard potentially void BMW warranty?

Don't see how it would unless they are dicks. I'm using the Turner Motorsports guard that is a direct bolt on and kept the original factory piece it replaced.

You know this would be covered under your collision insurance right?

Just throwing that out there....

Seems like a ridiculous amount of money and work to install a guard that appears to not fully protect the oil cooler anyway...

Agreed...

And that could potentially void your warranty if the engine got hot.

Our cars do have temperature gauges ... we'll know if the car is running hot and take actions to address that ... better than damaging the oil cooler on the highway, than you're toast and so might be your engine

The guard I've seen only protects the radiator in a very slightly way ...

Money aside, I won't take the risk voiding my warranty by installing one.

Ordered and installed the Tuner Motorsport skid plate oil cooler protector yesterday. Ordering and delivery through ECS was excellent. The install was very straight forward with no cutting or re-fabricating. Once I had the car on the ramps, only took me ~45 minutes to complete the job.

Would that Tuner protector really have prevented the tire tread damage that the OP said happened? It seem like the chance of it getting blocked by one of the three 1" cross bars seems very small.

Seems like something with many smaller openings would work better. An example was posted earlier.

No it doesn't void the warranty. I had an IND guard installed and the service advisor confirmed it doesn't affect the warranty. As a matter of fact, he said it was a good idea to get one installed.
