Bad vibration when braking

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hello,

Bit of a strange one. I've got a bad steering wheel and car vibration when braking, usually I would assume this is warped discs, but above 80mph there is no vibration when braking, which leads me to think it's not the discs, as it would get worse the faster I'm going, It gets gradually worse from 75mph until around 55mph when it's really bad, then under around 40mph it completely stops again. At first I thought it was a bad set of front spacers (TPI 15mm), so I removed these and it's still doing it. Any help would be appreciated.

Could be pad deposits on discs. If true you need to do a couple of high speed hard brakes almost to stop, but dont stop, and after drive for a while to let brakes cool

Tried re-bedding the pads already, didn't help unfortunately.

It's strange that it's at a specific speed range, I'm assuming pad deposit would also make the vibration worse at higher speeds.

Could be that you need new tires soon. How many miles do you have on the current tires?

The tyres were new when I got the car around 2,000 miles ago. I've got it booked in for replacing the Eibach springs that are fitted currently with KW HAS, a full alignment and geo and a road force wheel balance, if that doesn't make any difference, I'm assuming replacing discs and pads will be next. It could also be that the garage that fitted the Eibach springs potentially made an error somewhere, but they've been on for around 1500 miles without any issues, then suddenly a bad vibration under braking at certain speeds.

Are you on the stock pads then? If you are on aftermarket ones then this could explain
The stock ones are very good

It's on stock pads, also quite new, looks like they were changed at the last service at 17,300 miles, so around 3000 miles ago. I bought the car with 18,300 miles on it.

Quick update, took the car for a road force balance. Front left wheel is buckled, hence the vibration at certain speeds. It's getting refurbed on Friday, if that doesn't work it's time for a new wheel.

I am ALWAYS amazed when something which SHOULD cause vibration all the time, only does it under braking/during turns/accelerating only.

Glad you got it sorted.

let us know how the repaired wheel works out. curious because what you describe sure sounds like control arm bushings.

Tried a friends wheel, all good, no vibrations. I don't think control arm bushes are an issue in the F90? Very common in the F10. I'm actually struggling to find someone to repair it so may be a new wheel.

How does a wheel get buckled? Like hitting a pothole? That must have been a lot of force.

I actually clipped a curb, didn't go up it, just grazed it. It's kind of warped the wheel, proving difficult to repair due to it not being a normal buckle like you would get from hitting a pot hole too hard. There was actually minimal visible damage to the wheel.

Do you have the factory forged wheels?

Just the 706M wheels, my car is a non comp. Couldn't find a used wheel on it's own, so just bought a set for a very good price, sold the other 3 wheels that were in perfect condition, ended up costing me £75 for a wheel.

Definitely agree. Without the Road Force I would have probably ended up changing the discs and pads, then bushes. I think a buckled wheel would have been the last thing I would have checked.
