The tuning scene here seems kind of dead. Looking to get into an F90, curious if tuning it is just going to make the engine a ticking time bomb.

Yes. Most won't come here and talk bad news. Forums are for sharing good stuff so you won't see it much. Most don't know the perfect storm that makes them let go either. Custom tunes where u can tune out that initial hit and ramp in TQ are your best bet for the motor. JB4 is your best bet for if it goes boom, you're "covered"

That's a myth.

Go read how they use GPS telemetrics and ABS settings from an actual engineer: https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1834548

Is it most commonly bending a rod or not?

Really? You would think there would be some on line chatter if a mod engine blew.

Forums are for sharing yes, but there can be a bit of shame that can go along with a motor letting go, and that can lead most to not share. There are also legal implications that rule many decisions.

I agree. I think 85% of blown F90 engines are going unreported on these forums.

2018 model, done 35k kms. The tune was custom, 800 hp, 960 nm. In retrospect, it was inevitable.

It blew when I floored it with 2-3 liters of RON95 petrol left in the tank, I ALWAYS got the RON100 at Shell, this was the only time I was on the road and it wasn't available. Welp.

Thanks for the info! Did you build it up after? Or just replaced the engine and kept it stock?

I'm currently driving a replacement engine (slight tune to Stage 1 / 700hp), the old motor is being built. Once it's done, I'll try to get it to 1000hp. Not sure how long that will last, but since I already have a second engine if things go south, I don't have many excuses.

Also apparently MY20 engines are more durable - one of the changes is that the cylinder liners are made from cast iron.

What about the rods? I was under the impression the engine effectively has glass rods and a little detonation/knock with higher-than-stock boost and it's game over.

So based on your comment, you believe that even stage1 off the shelf maps are dangerous?
