Considered a used Turbo S with similar miles at $154k but ultimately went for the practicality first. I will get both, but can’t swing that at once. The M5 has more ground clearance for snow driving, a useable back seat, and a huge trunk. You would not believe the stuff I have hauled. Lumber, tools, drywall, trash, dogs. Bought it in April and have put almost 12k miles on it. The 991.2 Turbo might have been useful enough for half that driving. My other car at the time was a modded 08 E90 M3, but I wanted a primary driver that was newer and faster and AWD and more comfortable and bigger.

If I had a 550i instead of the M3, I would have gotten the 991.2 Turbo first.
Nice! My situation is different. The M550 is not my daily driver and it does not see winter, dogs, lumber, backseat passengers etc. I pretty much treat it as if it is my 911T. I have three other cars for all that stuff, including a large and mid-size SUV's and of course my low mile E39. If the M550 were an M5, it would be treated the same. Overkill for sure given neither car is in the 911T category. So if I am going to be OCD about my top car, it may as well be a car that should only be driven on summer Sundays.

I guess I am surprised a bit on how many of the F90 folks on this thread have to use it as their daily (including winter) driver.

I purchased the F90 to be my daily, my weekend car is a C8. I think the F90 is positioned, being so large and practical, to be a daily performance vehicle.

I definitely admire the C8, it's a lot of car for cheap money.

LOL! I don't look up or down at people who choose BMW's, especially the line of 5's, I am an enthusiast and I was there once when all I could afford was a 3-series (E30). I appreciate the brand and don't judge or put myself ahead of others because of the badge, but posers and over stating the M badge is definitely a pet peeve. BMW definitely is over doing the M brand but oh well. The M550 is in the M5 section on ordering and configuring, so I get why people put it in the same category. The manufacturer does.

As for the P - i get it if you're going used 4s then fair enough.

As for over doing the M brand not sure if you mean over marketing or over 'hyping'. My personal thought is the M variant really separates its self from the rest, i have owned a good bit of BMW's but the M5 is a drivers choice but for a 5 series owner its definitely above the rest. Like you I don't daily it but I have an x4mc as well and its an absolute blast to drive, I would choose that over m550 all day long. I think the M550 was over sold by BMW, i loved it but expected more. I'm also an enthusiast so understand your point of view as well, i have an e36 m3 which is an amazing car as well.

Point being we all love the brand but there are levels and variants that appeal to everyone differently, just keep enjoying them!

If you don’t really drive it or use it for the practicality it offers, sell it and buy the 911 Turbo. I have a 21 Cayenne S as well but the M5 can do most of what it can do. If I really needed an SUV and had to drive one most of the time, I would get a Cayenne Turbo or maybe an X5M. My view is that the car I drive the most should be the one I like the most. I am not trying to save happiness for later or rare occasions.

Yeah, we are definitely on the same page. In terms of my comments on the BMW trend to "M" everything and anything and in doing so diminishing the distinction of what a real M-only brings to the table, I totally get that, but I am definitely not as passionate about it as others are. BMW is a marketing machine set out to make as much money as possible. My E39 is a 2003 M-Tech. That meant something in 2003. I am not sure if it annoyed the E39 M5 crowd then. It had the same bumpers, same suspension, staggered but different wheels, same 6-speed tranny, but an engine with an S in front of the numbers. Pretty much the same as today with the M550 and the M5, the difference being, they put an M in front of the numbers on the trunk, something they would not have done in 2003 on the E39. So be it, I am certainly not one of the people that says an M550 is basically an M5 for $25k less, but it is a lot of car and a beast. The closeness in power between the two is the most surprising thing BMW did to me. I don't have an M5 so I am not sure how I would feel about the M550 encroaching on my exclusivity. I always wanted an M car but could not afford it. Now I can and I'm going Porsche over it and I think the M550 is what helped me make that decision. It's got enough overall juice and tech for a big ass sedan and the F90 doesn't handle much better. If you have ever driven a car with zero to minimal body roll, you know what I mean. That's pretty much any P car.

I am sure the X4MC is sweet, Christ there are so many BMW's I would like to own. I am wondering how the M8 CS handles, probably worse, but it looks lower and more balanced than the M5? Yeah, I never buy new. I have not problem saving a ton of money for a two year old car with 10-15k miles on it. I used to lease new once in a while, but my rule of thumb is if you lease because you can't afford to buy new, then you should not be leasing either.

Nice problems to have, huh?? Which $100k car is better than the other, lol.

I hear you, I definitely should drive the M550 more, it's not like it's a Ferrari. I just like to keep nice things nice. It is ZERO fun for me to put on snow tires and rims annually and drive a car around to get filthy as shit in and out and full of road salt. It's also no fun dodging winter potholes, that's not enjoying a performance car. I'd rather keep it in the garage and use the cars I care way less about. I also don't need to drive my top car to work 5 miles each way in the summer to sit and bake in the lot and get door dinged in the summer. Just personal hang-ups. Back in the day when my top car was my only car, I had no choice. I am in car accumulation mode these days. I am honestly going to try and keep all my German cars for a long, long time. Do you know how many cars I see on BaT that I had and that I wish I still had? I want to be that guy with a small collection someday. It may be hard to think about a current M550 or M5 being treasured someday, but I thought the same way about my E30 and E39.

Since this will be my first Porsche, I most likely will trade up after a year or two just because I don't know the brand well enough. It took me a lot of BMW's to get really selective.

Agreed - can't go wrong with a p car they are definitely amazing and superior depending on wants ... do we even maximize these cars without hitting a track i'd say no its just knowing its there i guess lol

as for leasing - i lease because usually within 6 months i'm bored of the car, that being said this m5 i may possibly buy out can't get enough of it 10 months later but a hybrid m5 sounds interesting as well lol it never ends

... only thing i differ on is power - the m5 has a ton more and a freight train up top vs m550. m5 advertised at 625 is smoking mirrors, i had a dinan flash in my m550 and it got brutalized by stock m5's. the x4 had about a car on it ..

we are definitely in a good position to have these conversations

The irony for me is I really don't even drive that hard or need the power, I just want it! Yeah my test drives of the MC don't give me a clue. I'm sure you are right. Like I mentioned, the handling and driving experience is more important to me. I am not out racing people from green, but I love to know it is there. Used to do that more, I have no problem letting someone blow by me from stop, but I like to shake my head at them knowing I could compete it I wanted to. Just getting old I guess.

I guess you had the 450hp model as I'm running 10.9 on the 523hp model with just a jb4.
