Besides cars I have a passion for boats. I have a 1971 Trojan Sea Raider, she was 50 this year. This is a smaller boat for us but it's mostly a weekender.

And then there is the 1970 Donzi Ski Sporter. This thing has been completely stripped and rebuilt and only has about 10 hours on it, not even broken in yet. This thing scares me a little bit, she has a 351 Holman Moody motor, about 400 HP.

my home for 25 years. I worked at a shipyard and it caught fire during a sea trial which dropped the asking price from $120k to 50k so I rebuilt it. Never had enough time off to sail it across an ocean but bumped all over the Texas and Louisiana coast in it. It was a casualty of the great recession in 2009 but I still miss it today.

On the plus side I'm kind of glad I had it when I was young and had the energy to use it as much as I did. Sailboat maintenance is cake so it wasn't expensive at all. And yes, you can fish off a sailboat.

Very nice, I do love sailboats. My current wife and I purchased our first boat together, a 36 CS Merlin. The previous owner did a huge refit on her and sailed her from the Great lakes to Britain, the Caribbean and home. We never made it that far but still had a great time on her.

not to make this a sailboat thread but my all time favorite sailboat was the 88 Taswell 43. Perfect layout for liveaboards. They still pull strong money for a Taiwanese boat. Good quality but not Finnish prices.

Not very liveaboard friendly but I toured a classic 65 Hinkley 40 Bermuda which is pretty much the "Clark Gable" of sail boats. It was so classy I was embarrassed just being on board.

Bust Out Another Thousand

Dad shared a 36' racing sloop for many years when I was a kid. Then he bought a 26' Bayliner for lakes. My brothers' friends loved to go with my dad, he had one of those parachutes. I dragged a few people across the shoreline, but could never get it up

(the parachute, get your mind out of the gutter!)

We were in the power boating scene for a while (still have one). I've been kind of over it. Having to wash clean, & flush the motors after each use (stored in a warehouse) sucks. I love boating but enjoy our friends Formula with shade and AC more these days.
See below, don't know first thing about boats, but why did the motors need to be flushed (and what exactly does that mean) every time you used the boat? And presumably the washing was because it was in salt water? Which is something I don't have to worry about lol.

My biggest takeaway right now is keeping a jet boat in an in-water slip seems complicated/troublesome. Need to look into that more. I love keeping my boat in water.
My wife would LOVE a boat, and I would HATE one for the expense and trouble. But I don't know the first thing about boats - what makes keeping a jet boat in an in-water slip complicated / troublesome?

The flushing is....yes....because of the marine water running through the engine. Because of how boats are, it's impossible to get enough cooling through a traditional radiator type system depending on air to run through a radiator. So the surrounding water is used to cool the engine by pumping it into a heat exchanger and then discharging the heated water out the side of the boat.

So wait though - if you aren't running it in salt water, does it still need to be flushed because there could still be crap / vegetation in the water? And what is the process of flushing - hook it up to a garden hose or something to clear the system?

Thanks for the reply though - again something I didn't know about boats. There's a lot I don't know though.

Yes, you would still flush the system due to any organic matter/crap that gets into the cooling system. I'm still pretty new to this whole boating thing and I also don't have a power boat but a sail boat with an inboard diesel. Mine was purchased used with two previous owners. I don't know if either of them have ever flushed the cooling system.

The cooling system in my boat has two loops in it. One is your traditional cooling system that uses 50/50 coolant. This coolant circulates to the heat exchanger where the surrounding water is pumped through it to pick up the heat from the 50/50 coolant. This water is then discharged out the side of the boat. Incidentally, it's also where the engine exhaust is sent out over the same opening. I don't know if there are any motors out there where there is direct contact within the engine block with the marine water as the coolant. I'd think this would be a major headache.

Every one that I've ever owned or dealt with drew in sea/lake/river water, ran it through the engine block, and then spit it out with the exhaust back into the sea/lake/river. Outboards in particular.

I helped with a 289 Ford marine V8 rebuild in my late teens, and will never forget the aluminum exhaust headers that were cooled by the outgoing water and mixed the water/exhaust. I spent days with the end caps off of those manifolds trying to clean years of salt accumulation from ocean water out of them. (FWIW, the engine block was a write-off, but the heads and aluminum water-cooled intake manifold also needed serious cleaning as part of their professional rebuilds).....
