Oil Change
Just had my 2nd oil change at the dealer and after parking in my garage, there were many drops of oil on the floor. None after 1st oil change. Hoping it is not a leak, could it be a sloppy oil change or should I bring back to dealer?

I do not think if they put too much in the oil would drip out unless an engine seal blows, too much oil is a no no. Previous posts indicate 9.5 L per change, my dealer adds 10 L on my last two changes. Oil level indicator shows max, not sure if it would warn of overfilling. Other posts say changing oil filter can spill oil, I will check to see if dripping stops and bark at the dealer if dripping stops. Is the oil filter under the car? Where does spilled oil sit if dealer is sloppy?

Thank you Aronis for the detailed oil change post! I asked if the dealer would use the Weistec Fillter Housing with a drain plug and the dealer will not install aftermarket housings. I am considering doing my own oil changings to prevent these issues, I have a mechanic 1 minute from my home with a ramp lift. Is the Weistec Housing any good?

I would go with the sloppy change. Probably from the filter but could be a shaky hand when filling or letting it splash out when draining. Time is money, and you paid full price and got little time. It’s unfortunate because dealers should be setting the standard. I do all my own work once the car is out of warranty. Saves money, the work is usually done with more care, and when I mess up I can accept my mistake.

This has happened twice to me. Both times required a trip back to the dealer to have it cleaned up. They removed the stiffening plate, cleaned the oil spill and reinstalled it. I was assured at my next oil change they will remove the stiffening plate to prevent this issue. (This is not a standard BMW proceedure)

Its just the nature of the stupid design, previous gens had a small nut you could remove on the filter cap to avoid this issue entirely. |
