First service. How many miles is too late?
Have my first service coming up next week. Going to drive out of town this weekend and will probably put 500 miles on it which will get me to around 1600 miles by the time I take it in for service. Is that going to be an issue? Read somewhere that someone's warranty got flagged because of a late break-in service.

No hard number, but anyone's best estimation seems to be anything below 2000 miles, most dealers will be fine, particularly if you tried to schedule before or right when you hit 1200. I would just contact yours now and ask.

FWIW, I was told by my SA to keep it below 1400 miles. IMHO, may be just do the required service before your trip to avoid any potential warranty issues with BMW. Enjoy your car in good health and safely!!

There is a sad post about someone who went in at more than 2k miles for the run in service and they gave him shit about the warranty, You'll have to search for the thread. Kinda of shitty stuff pulled by BMW on that guys car.

I would get a response from the service manager in an email stating going over the 1,200 mile mark will not be an issue. Better to be safe than sorry. The answers people give you here is of no value if the dealer decides to make it an issue.

Back when I had a F10 M5 I was at 900 miles and about to drive from Phoenix to Vegas for a weekend. I emailed my service advisor and asked if I should come in for the 1200 mile service early or to wait. He said that it was no problem to wait until I was back. I was around 1400-1500 when I got it done.
If you want piece of mind, just shoot an email to your service advisor and get a response. At least that way you will have something documented should you run into problems.

If they want to stick to the book, anything over 1500 is bad news for you. I usually schedule mine at 1000 so I don’t have to think about it.

I just asked this very question of BMW today.
I'm at 1130 miles and they cannot book me in for another two weeks as they're full. I asked "how much is too much". The reply was "not more than 1400 miles". |

Especially with Covid, everyone is flexible. I was 6 months over in time but way under in miles. My vehicles were put away for winter so they dont go in for any service until spring and salt is off my mountain road.

What do you mean over in time. Is there a time limit by which the break in service must be completed?

Had my break in service yesterday. 2 days shy of a full month of ownership. 1100 miles (almost) when performed.

Not to one up anyone, but I bought my M5 on July 7, 2019 in San Diego and drove it home to Portland, arriving the next day. Ready for break in service by hour 28 of ownership. No messing around.

I am enjoying it thoroughly. Having waited 6 months, and paying over 150k for this thing... I want to drive it the way it was intended. I take care of my toys, not to be confused with abusing them. I followed the guidelines on the break in period, and now I don't need to take the long way home anymore
