I finally decided to take my M5 in to get this diagnosed/fixed. The weather has been a bit cooler, and it's only getting worse.

My dealer (Ferman BMW) has had the car for 4 days. Of course they have been unable to replicate the noise. I showed them the labor sheets from other posts/threads on the dust shields. I was able to speak with the shop foreman and show him some videos that I took. He was very receptive and believes that the dust shields were the likely cause. Unfortunately, he had to try for 3 days to replicate the sound before BMW NA would approve replacing the dust shields. Because they were unable to really zero in on what the noise was coming from on their own, they said that they will not guarantee the repair resolves the issue.

BMW NA did admit that this was a known issue with the F90.

The parts are now on order. The car should be ready by Tuesday. Fingers crossed...

It's been 2 weeks since my M5 was fixed and I haven't heard the noise again since then.
Has your car made the noise since ???

In my experience with past m cars including my M3's, wife's X3M comp, and once my M5 comp, it was always a small pebble that got wedged between brake dust shield and the brake rotor. It stops when it gets dislodged or breaks apart. The sound is horrifying and very loud and high pitched. Like my entire suspension is dragging on the pavement. Very sticky tires spilling pebbles everywhere.

This is what I have from my dealer. It resolved the issue so far. It's been a few weeks. DM if you have any other questions!

I had the same issues. Went in for rear dust shield and fixed the problem. Techs should know what the issue is and what part number you need. At this point, it's got to be more common than you think (judging by number of people who've echo'ed having the same problems you've described)

Good luck!

My 2019 started this sound yesterday. First noticed in parking garage at 2mph. It does it intermittently at all speeds. Pitch / sound freq is the same at all speeds.

This morning a number of errors popped up in the car... https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1884279

Vehicle Dynamics Management | 4828EC Rebound Front Left Open Line

Not sure if suspension error is relatable to the sound? If its dust shields so be it but my experience in dust shield noise has been rotational in nature... sound changes at speed.

Service appointment set for wednesday and I will be using the information here to help the dealer sort it. Thanks to all.

Unfortunately the dealer is giving me grief

My car has been there three times now. Of course, the first time they could not duplicate the sound. The second time, the shop foreman rode in the car with me and heard the sound. They blamed the aftermarket exhaust. Had the stock exhaust put back on and now they are saying the valves are making noise. I'm so incredibly frustrated! I've given them video of the sound as well as the video and repair orders that are posted on this thread.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm in SoCal? It is currently at New Century BMW in Alhambra and has been there for over a week!

All right $2600.00 later

The rear axle dust shield was the noise issue - repaired under warranty.

The suspension error was related to the o2 Sensor error which was related to the alternator error. Rat chewed the wire on the F Drivers shock, chewed through an o2 sensor and the alternator comm wire. Thats was $2600.

All better now. Dont park overnight at the Embassy Suites Monterey Bay.

Sigh...seems like my 2019 Comp is making this squealing noise now. 18k miles.
Also got the SOS Emergency call function not available message.
I have extended warranty in UK so will see what they say.

F90 M5 Comp Loud Annoying Squeal

I've started noticing this exact same noise from the rear when the car is cold or has been sitting overnight. The noise starts to dissipate when the car warms up and has been driven a few miles. I will schedule a service appointment and bring up this thread to the service advisor. New to me 2019 M5 Comp (39K miles). At first I thought it might have something to do with the rear seat climate control. Appreciate everyone's input in this issue!

Hi,

Did you get a response back from UK warranty on this repair?

Well mine just started doing the exact same thing, only after parking the car for the night and goes away after warming up.

Unfortunately for me my car is a 2019 and I think I am out of the factory 4 year warranty even though I am still under the 50k miles (21k). Any idea how much this would cost to fix? It is pretty loud considering I'm running stage 2 (dp+mp no cats) and I can still hear it over the exhaust sound. Is it safe to keep driving like this until my repair appointment?

It is quite the annoying sound but it should be a simple fix. Unfortunately I do not have a clue what it could cost you if you are not under warranty.

Cheers

Currently in talks with dealer, they may fix it under good will since my factory warranty just expired a few months ago and I'm still under half of the 50k miles factory warranty. Your work order helped because I showed them that and they said it had something called the PUMA case # with video attached which allows them to track down the issue internally in their systems so thanks for posting that work order! I'm being quoted 10 hours for the job and the rear diff/axles need to come out so it is definitely not a cheap fix without warranty. Crazy to think a 21k mile car has this issue.

I am so glad to hear that the work order helped! I am also glad that they will cover it - that certainly is the right thing to do given your low mileage

Enjoy!
