Who Needs an SUV?
All ready for my bike vacation. I was surprised how much you could get on top of the car and still have room in the trunk for all my wife's stuff
And yes, that is Azurite Black. The sun was really pulling the blue out in these shots. Last edited by Scotchtion; 09-02-2018 at 02:07 PM.. |

The fit kit for the rack is the standard 5-series from Thule. That kit bolts into the mounts on the roof. I don't know for sure, but I've heard the CF roof only has the little door covers but no actual bolt holes inside.

Further testament to the amazing nature and versatility of this car!
You can get an M5 w/o the CF roof??

Those are great racks. I used one on my M4 Convertible where you had no other choice. It goes on really fast, but I am just not comfortable going more than a few miles with the bike suction cupped to the car. I like something that bolts down for a 500 mile road trip.
That said, I can setup the Sea Sucker and be off in the time it takes me to just get one of the Thule cross bars on. And I've never lost a seal, they are a decent alternative. Though I have had issues with it leaving a ring in the paint on really hot days. Seems a bit of the rubber will melt or something. Never happens when it is cooler. |

That was the case on the F80 but I thought on the F90 the mounting points were there even with carbon roof.

Carbon roof has the same rack mount points as the moonroof option.
Works like a charm on mine. |

I've really be using her like an SUV as well. Had my family of 5 (3 kids 14, 12 and 10) in car many times and trunk loaded with luggage. It's our family car of choice, unless we need the GLS for 7 people or extreme packing. Will utilize all winter myself as my DD for work, etc.

We just did a six hour drive one way with the car and it was great. Everyone was comfortable and all the luggage (with stroller) fit in the trunk.
On a side note, the gas mileage is great on the highway. I averaged 25 mpg while normally I get around 17 when driving around town (mixed local and highway). |

I sort of assumed the carbon roof on the F90 M5 would NOT be compatible with a bike rack. I am huge mountain bike enthusiast - actually coach the local High School NICA MTB team...
If I can drive this in winter (AWD with a nice set of winter tires) AND put a roof rack that can carry 2 or 3 bikes - my 2016 loaded X5 50i might be going in on trade soon. The wind noise with bikes on the roof might drive me a little crazy - but its only temporary. Curious - what kind of range in miles are people seeing out of a full tank?

Wind noise was a bit much. My 29er is very loud. Road bike is much better. With the moonroof shade closed, can't hear it. Not the case with the MTB.
I got about 19-20 mpg with the MTB on the top, but was going into some significant head winds. I didn't test the range of the tank, but easily could get 370 miles or so with the bike and box up top. |

hitch
I see there are companies making a discreet hitch for the 5 series - I wonder if it would work on the M5... maybe different exhaust, etc could be an issue.
https://stealthhitches.com INterested in an M5 but definitely need to transport two mountain bikes

Just another confirmation that the CF roof F90 does have the normal roof rack mount points under the little doors. Very nice!

Many thanks - this answered my question perfectly - can anyone confirm that once the rack is fitted, there is a small gap to the roof & so it will dot scratch the carbon roof.

Got my fit kit for the M5 last week, have to set it up. I'll try to sell the fit kit from the M2 on line.

The fit kit (for Thule) has a rubber pad that protects the roof. The feet sit on that pad. It doesn't scratch paint, but can't tell you if it will protect CF.

Exactly, I used exactly that on my M2....but still thought about it as a possible issue.thought maybe leaving a stainless bolt in the hole that would still allow the door to close would protect the threads from corrosion.

How quickly can you install this rack? I would have to go on and off each time I want to ride some trails as I wouldn’t leave it on all the time (would look ridiculous).
Would love to know if this is super quick or not! |
