F90 M5 Competition Package - April Production + 625 HP

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I have it on good authority that the F90 M5 Competition Package goes into production beginning of April.

One more piece of information from the same source: Competition package will come in at 625hp

The confirmation was given by BMW's head of the BMW Driving Experience at their event in Sweden (going on as we speak) called the BMW M Ice Experience. Invitations to the event are sent to BMW's top sales advisors. Here is a link about the event https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUWUBqMzL3A)

Anyway, do with the information as you will

can't understand why they'd release them so close together (based on history) but maybe they are trying to what MB does now with a normal and S version....

Glad to hear it. I suspected the news would change some people's decisions on whether to order the regular m5 vs. waiting for the competition package.

That’s great news; my dealership hinted they expected it to be available in April / May as well.

BMW has been hinting for some time now that the competition package on the m5 will come early.

Just one example :

I wonder when the updated ordering guide with the ZCP (and pricing) will appear.

Only thing that kept me away from the Comp Edition was the mandatory ceramic brakes. $8,500 for one part vs the excellent drilled steels.....could not justify the price vs performance.

Interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if this were true, but let's still wait and see what BMW officially puts out. Either way, we know for certain they will come out with Competition Package this year. Although, if it will be true that Carbon Brakes are mandatory, then that might be a tough pill to swallow for some buyers.

Now the other question remains, what about LCI? It's usually 3 years before an LCI comes out, however I am now hearing rumors that BMW is intending to start skipping LCI updates all together and come out with new generation models earlier. I've heard such things about the current F15 X5, that there will be no LCI update. So now I'm wondering if BMW will do the same with the G30/F90? Especially since it seems like they are introducing a Com Package so early in the lifecycle.

This is great news since this hopefully means that when the new M3/M4 comes out this strategy will follow suit. Awesome.

According to ynguldyn's model roadmap thread, EOP for the G30 is still scheduled for 10/23, so I assume it follows the standard 7 year cycle (MY2017 to MY2023) with a LCI in between.

The F15 X5 does have a shorter lifecycle than usual from MY2014 to MY2018, but I wonder if the increasing competition in this segment and potential cost savings of switching to the CLAR platform with the G05 X5 are pushing BMW to do a full model refresh earlier rather than spend money on an LCI.

Ah good info. Thanks! So for now I am assuming we'll see an LCI update of the F90 M5 as early as 2019 as the 2020 Model Year F90 M5. That's like 18 months from now if the LCI comes out in summer/fall of 2019. I wonder what the new headlights are gonna look like?

Practically speaking, there is little reason why BMW would adopt an early LCI timeline, rather than the standard 3-4 year LCI. Early LCI would only deter early adopters knowing that a better looking/updated/newer version of the car is right on the horizon; and diminish early sales. Meanwhile on the back end of the timeline, the car design would become stale. LCI in the middle of the timeline avoids both of those consequences.

Has there been any announcement (other than conjecture) that BMW actually intends to begin roll out LCI's earlier in their timeline?

They can make more money in options earlier than later. Car won't become stale.
I hope the comp package comes with better looking wheels.

instead they couldve made the m5 like that from the start (more power and w.e else)....but its all about making money cant blame em we also all know 625hp is the biggest lie. its probably even more than that at the wheels.

This means the real hp will be more like 655 at the crank.

Maybe that package blacks out the horrific chrome grill on the M5? Would probably be worth $10K in that case

If you ask me release the new stuff ASAP. Get rid of this oh the newer comp package will be out in 19 months so I will hold off. If 600hp is your cup of tea then Standard M5 is being purchased. If you want the have 625 so all the guys in the group are envious then so be it, buy that.

If you look back at the speed of these cars being released, I bet the "Original LCI" becomes a thing of the past and they roll out new model every 5-6 years with "LCI Updates" being quicker and diluted in there release. Look at the M3/M4 LCI and LCI II. Changes over the years but not huge "this is the LCI you have been waiting for" type of release. It will dribble out changes.
