OMG.
Open track day is happening almost every weekend across the country.
Why do it on the public road.

RIP to them though.

I hate to say it, but this is was happens when you don't respect the power of the car, and probably turned off all the nannies, traction control. 3:15 in the am, sounds like a, let me take the boys for a blast.

Please, if your young do not drive these cars.
RIP to to the families, it not worth it. No need to show off. Live your life man !

While the event is sad, age has nothing to do with maturity behind the wheel.

And the event is sad.

But age has everything to do with maturity. We grant licenses to people who aren't legal to drink or smoke. While there are plenty of young people with a lot of maturity behind the wheel, ON AVERAGE, they aren't ready to make competent life changing decisions. Which is why it's illegal for them to do things. Once you throw age out as a decision making process, then you start justifying people having sex with 15 and 16 year olds - and EVERYONE knows that's wrong. So saying that driving is different and age has nothing to do with it is just not intellectually valid.

RIP to the folks in the car. Sorry such a thing happens.

I hesitate to get involved with this budding imbroglio, but there is merit to the youth and immaturity argument, as any parent knows. A 21 year-old male, while appearing fully developed and seemingly capable of making intelligent decisions, is physiologically immature. The area of the brain associated with complex cognitive behavior and decision making, the so-called executive functioning center identified as the prefrontal cortex, doesn't fully develop on average until age 25, and one could argue even later as the current forces of societal evolution allow and encourage further delays in maturity.

We don't know the ages of the people involved in this tragic crash, but it's inaccurate to say that youthful age could not be a contributing factor. While I allow my 19 year-old to drive my M5, it's always with me in the passenger seat!

I was primarily focusing on the driving maturity level of adults, but I see all of your points.

I've seen (and instructed on the track) many "adults" that I wouldn't trust to drive a Prius let alone an M car.

The ages involved in the crash are 4 youths from 20 - 24, hence my post about being young and having a powerful car.

Four young guys out at 3 in the morning, alcohol not suspected to be a factor, and very long skid marks suggesting high rate of speed - what were they doing? Attempting vmax... would be my guess.

Remember that guy who crashed on the autobahn going 180+ mph and everyone, including the dog, survived? That car looked in better condition than this... obviously that guy didn't wrap himself around a pole.

The only certainty is that 4 young men lost their lives and leave behind grieving loved ones left to deal with it. As a father of 3, I could think of nothing worse than what those families are going through right now!

This thread is total bull. Yes it's sad, but stop with the age (only old people know how to drive crap), and sex with minors. wTf.

It is a tragedy and sad for the families left behind.

A good reminder that this car has a hell of a lot of inertia - "spirited driving" vs. bombing along at 250+ kph are two completely different animals. The manual emphasizes that for high speed driving you are supposed to run higher tire pressures (obviously) and only two people in the car. In reality, only frequent track and race drivers have any meaningful competent experience at high speed decision making and the reflexes honed by experience - I believe at the top-end (m drivers pack) with 305+ kph the m5 is going to be looking at almost a 1000ft to stop and that is only if your reflexes are spot on. I passed on ordering the m-drivers pack for the main reason that I will always, at least once (allegedly), "see what it will do" despite telling myself I should know better. Public roads at night obviously don't fit the bill. I'm old so i'll just take to a drag strip lol.
