Daily ride comfort:M5 competition
What are your opinions on the ride comfort of the M5 competition. I know it has a stiffer ride than the regular M5 but is it livable as a daily driver? I know the M5 competition is set up to be a much better track car than the regular M5 but most people including myself will rarely if ever take this car to the track...it will be driven 99.99% of the time on regular roads. So in this regards, how does it perform in terms of daily ride comfort?

I initially had reservations with the daily driving ride comfort on the M5C given how horrible the city roads are where I live and drive every day (Chicago), but this was purely based on online reviews, forum posts, and limited test drives. At one point I was convinced I would get the base M5 instead of the Comp just to maximize ride comfort.
A local dealer was able to loan me an M5C for an extended test drive, where I drove it in and around the city where I live and much to my surprise, it was plenty comfortable enough in comfort mode. Certainly more comfortable than my previous RS7 and definitely more compliant than a friend's current E63S, which in my opinion has an unnecessarily harsh ride. Even though the spring rates are firmer and more responsive, the M5C takes the big hits well and doesn't bottom out as much over potholes and big bumps as badly as the Range Rover Velar it replaced (which had air suspension). So I'd say it's pretty good considering what it is. Enough to make me change my mind to go Comp instead of base. It's no 7-series and you will get jostled on some really bad roads, but most of the time, it rides like a luxury car should. One more thing to note is that the ride as a passenger in the rear seats felt much harsher compared to the front seats when I tried sitting back there, but to this day my kids who are harnessed in their child seats back there haven't complained lol. If you're concerned about ride quality for rear seat passengers, keep this in mind.

Ride is firm but certainly not harsh even on the horrible roads I contend with daily. If I had to do over it over again,I’d still go M5C without a second thought.

I've owned my M5C since September and have absolutely no issues with ride harshness, firmness etc. I like suspensions that provide driver feedback and this car does not disappoint in that regard. With that said, the feedback comes via the tuned suspension and that will inherently give it a harsher, firmer feel. Wife occasionally complains about the "bumpiness" of the car; our 3 kids have no issues whatsoever. I've since gone to KW HAS and a 21" wheel setup and still have no complaints.

M5 comp...best car ever.
Comfort is just fine, you need to be aware that you drive M car..even more M comp car..so its not comfort as S class with air suspension, but is just what M driver needs...and that sound..❤️ |

I’m sure an s-class merc is much smoother, but I don’t want that. For how well it performs it’s about perfect, imo. |

OP, you do know this car still weighs 4200lbs right? or did BMW's marketing fool you that hard? |

So here's my 2 cents, for what it's worth. Currently 2 years into an M550. Great car. Fast. Comfortable. Fun. Can go 500 miles and an walk away fresh and eager to get going again the next day. Always wanted an M5, but life gets in the way. Came on to this forum when he F90 came out, and you guys really make your case for ownership. So, then I wanted one too, but current lease goes to May 2020. Plenty of time for due diligence, especially after the Comp reviews started coming in.
My local dealer had 10 M5s awhile back. I was able to drive a standard M5, but only for about a mile. Nice car. Further reading and video watching kept pointing me to the Comp, but the stiffer ride question was always there. And as everyone says: just test drive both. That day came yesterday. There are now only 2 M5s on the lot. One of each flavor. First up was a Black Sapphire Comp. Started with everything in comfort, blasted on to the freeway and then got off to drive on a slightly bumpy, but twisty road. Then I put the steering and suspension in Sport and the ride firmed up a lot. Got back on the freeway with the engine in Sport, and........holy hell! Nice car. I could be very happy in this car. Comfort suspension is not harsh at all. Swapped out the Comp for a standard Marina Bay Blue with Aragon. Nice spec. With everything in comfort again, I immediately noticed a difference just driving off the lot. Softer, yes, but felt good. Went through basically the same course and tried multiple combinations of everything. Everything in Sport seems to get the job done quite well. I thought my M550 was fast. This is another level. My main goal was to see if the differences in the two cars were measurably noticeable and would I be able to come to a decision. Yes to both. The verdict: I'm going standard M5. Just a little bit cushier , but I can firm it up if needed. Might be a little easier as a long distance cruiser. I totally get why someone would want a Comp, but I guess the M550 has spoiled me and the standard M5 is that car on a ton of steroids. The long wait begins. |

My M5 Comp has been my daily driver for the last few months and I find the suspension just fine. Sure its a slightly less cushy ride compared to the base model but the handling feels more "plugged in" on the road. I always use M1 with Sport Plus settings and have not felt her bottom out yet. That was not the case with my last go fast car, 2017 ZL1, which had a much more brutal suspension. The Comp looks a lot lower to me than the base, even tho I know its only 7 mm. And the better exhaust and black bits were the final straw that did me in. The plusses of the Comp version far outweigh the negatives for me.

Daily driver thru deep snow and fair weather it's too comfortable....not much road feel which is a plus for most. Amazing performance, but prefer my uncouth GTR ...( let the hate begin), when I'm 80 I will appreciate this car although i have to admit it's growing on me.

Only 450 miles in & love the M5C
Agree with the above - I test drove the E63s and the M5C is better for UK roads - the M5 is great, but the M5C is sharper, with more poise/better handling. It feels like it has a bit more feedback than the M5, letting you know when you are edging over 4/10ths (yep - being realistic & I'm still limited to 5500rpm). I found the M5 too inert for my tastes & too much like the sanitised feel of the F10 M5 (albeit way better in every aspect). |

Hi folks!
Have been thinking of buying an M5 Comp (current car is X6 50i ,450hp, 16 reg plate 19.5k miles, first owner - on PCP ending this August ) , not sure though whether to go for the Competition or the 'normal' one. Have driven the normal M5, felt obviously stiffer and quicker than my X6 with air springs. At that time it was a bit too hard for me compared to my luxurious full merino X6.And I must admit I really like the high SAV driving position ... (had a tuned F30 335XD before that) BUT. Since I drove that M5 times have changed, prices have dropped too, and I have read so many good review of the Comp. Pack one that I am really thinking about buying one. I did not manage to arrange a testdrive yet , local dealer sold demo car etc.. I am sure that is different to a normal one, said to behave more like one of the old M cars . Love the sound of if in sport plus mode which U don't use all the time anyway as it's too loud , but sometimes , weekeds amazing fun . My main concern is the comfort . We have not got the best roads in Dorset and I would hate a car which is too hard even in comfort mode.Apparently you feel all the bumps and the surface of the road even in eff. mode.Pros and cons.. Mrs has got an X2, 68 plate, 20d, she loves it to bits, I don't... It is a nice car don't get me wrong. But the seats are too tight, when I seat in the passanger seat I feel like being in a bunker .. She knows that I hate it and I do feel very guilty as I made the deal I did want this car Not anymore though... Selling an X6 V8 , it's not easy. This one has a special colour , sparkling storm with an extravagant interior , that's how the extra was called. The car has mint condition, but I think they are afraid of the combination of the colours. I do believe though that I could sell it privately and have a nice equity on it. All what dealers offered were under my August GFV , not good. They either suggested selling it privately or just VT it which I don't really fancy . https://images.caricos.com/b/bmw/201..._1920x1080.jpg with this interior.https://www.autocar.co.uk/sites/auto...?itok=-ZKSB0wo Anyhow, what I thought today that perhaps we should keep the X6 and get rid of the X2 , Mrs is not very happy about the idea and would not be a good idea financially either. Her car is also a well equipped car but has lost a lot of its value since last year unfortunately. However if we kept my lovely X6 for her I and I could get a nice new M5 we would be all happy Will do some maths but this latest option would be the worst idea money wise. We would have 2 quick V8's though and at least one very comfortable car . She only wants 5 doors as she would like to have kids that's why she had her 2 series PX changed into this current X2. She has drive mine a few times, not very confident about its dimensions though . Thank you for reading my story , if you have any good buying suggestions please let me know , I hope you all enjoy your M5' s ! If somebody could tell me about the ride comfort of the M5 Comp in daily life, that would be great. (ps buying a 3rd car is not an option for sure )

I've had my M5C for 3 days now and I'll say the ride is a bit firmer than I'd like for a daily driver, but I'm hoping I'll get used to it.
To be clear, there's no harshness at all, especially compared to e.g. the E63S in which more texture made its way in. But not only do you hear everything you do feel everything in a damped way that shifts the body of the car. So the ride overall while not bone shattering does cause your body to move around a lot. Northern Californian roads. |

Nice story..i was in same situation 6 months ago..i have had individual san marino blue 640xd and when i tried to sell it to same dealer from what a bought the car he offered me 1/4 of the value of the car.
So i sold my car by myself.Best solution. Then i put the trigger on M5 comp and after that i sold 5 years x5 and bought new x5. So my suggestion: get rid off old cars..sell them..and then squeeze your dealer for best possible price for M5 and X5. M5 is garage queen and X5 will be daily. About comfort in M5 comp..well its M5 comp..this car is not supposed to be comfort as priority 1 and if you are looking for extra comfort go with M550ix.. For me its amazing and its comfort..so if you can afford it go for it,otherwise you will make sad face when you see M5 comp going your way while you sitting in your comfort car. |

On to the topic; I love my competition package - did have concerns at the beginning with the "harshness" of the ride coming from a F10. However, that lasted only a few days - just needed to get used to it. Even the wife does not say a word on the ride quality - I don't ask but, trust me, if she felt the ride negatively, she would tell me. All of this is, of course in comfort mode...I have not tested her in sport plus.... ...the other thing I notice is that I never have to go to Sport or Sport plus in this car because the comfort mode is perfect. Only time I bump up the setting is when I want my neighbors to hear my exhaust sing - it is beautiful. |

I have gotten my F90 Comp for 4 days now. In comfort mode, the car is absolutely comfortable for myself and my family. Comparable in terms of Comfort to my G30 540i with adaptive suspension on ac schnitzer lowering springs. No issues at all. Love the car.
