M Performance Exhaust Installation

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hey everyone, just had the M Performance Exhaust installed. I had it done at an independent euro shop. After seeing other pictures online I’m trying to figure out if my exhaust tips were installed correctly - they seem like they may be too far out from the back bumper. For those that have one, do my tips look like they’re in the right position?

Thanks!

Yours are definitely sticking out more than mine are. At first I thought mine were too far in but I think they’re actually perfect and how they’re supposed to be. Another member pulled up the install guide for the exhaust and it shows that it should be under the bumper/diffuser and not sticking out past it. I’ll grab some pictures of mine tomorrow.

Funny thing is my tips wouldn’t even come out farther than they are now. There’s a notch on it that doesn’t allow it to come out further so I’m not sure how your shop even got it out that far. Maybe they shaved off the notch that holds them in place. That’s the only way I can think of making that possible.

+1 — Agree with jm490. I do not have the MPE on my LCI, but I am quite familiar with it on other applications.

You should not have the gap between the lower bumper and the back of the tip indicated in your photo below when looking at profile view.

Thank you so much for the input and pictures. I saw the guide online, which is why I was questioning it. After looking at the guide I looked at my tips, and I could a actually see the notch behind the tips - it looks like they placed them so they're pushed all the way up the notches, but the notches are definitely outside the clamp for the tips. I'm betting they didn't remove the bolt fully to place the notch between the clamp as described in the instructions. The tips on the actual product look different than in the installation instructions; in the instructions it looks like the carbon tips are angled on both edges, but the tips are cut at 90 degrees on the product. I also don't see any difference between left and right tips, as the guide suggests. Since the picture is different than the actual tips I was wondering if the guide was wrong or if it was angled on the guide for illustrative purposes.

Are those notches supposed to sit underneath the carbon then? Can you see them on yours?

I agree - that's another thing that made me question the placement! Thank you!

It's hard to get a good picture of the notch, but you can see it here behind the tip. The tip is placed all the way up to the notch.

You're not supposed to "push" you're supposed to depress the pin and turn like you're mounting a Bayonett, per the instruction😂 could just be that's the whole issue, problem is you can't get to the bolt to remove tips without lowering the whole exhaust or at least the rear section

Update everyone - I took it back to the shop, and the problem was that the tips were not installed correctly. They removed the tips, removed the screw from the tips, and per the instructions slid the tips back on with the pin passing through the bracket, and turned the tips like a bayonet fastening before reinstalling the screw.

The pins are supposed to rest beneath the carbon fiber component when installed correctly.

I've seen pictures of some other folks with the tips sticking out like mine were. Hopefully this will help others with installation!

Just picked mine up like 3 weeks ago, had the Exhaust added to my build and port installed.

It's in about the same place as my M8

Night and Day difference versus M-Sport (M5C) or Base exhaust.

In my opinion, the MPE is what a proper M5 should sound like. This is obviously subjective, but the Base and M5C are way too muted for my taste.
