Today I went to take a look at a M5 Competition. Had a little chat with the salesman there... we talked about the rims and then I was told the following:

"I like the standard wheels more than the the competition set. The reason is that the tire is bedded a bit different, the comp. rim is slightly wider thus the rubber..." and so on... and so on...

I was surprised to say the least... all the 20" wheels are 9.5J wide... unfortunately they had not one M5 Comp. there with the 789 M Rims to compare with.

To all M5 (Comp.) owners... can you confirm? I feel a bit as if I was told some BS but I'd like to know for sure.

Thanks

PS: I know for sure that the 789 M Rims are lighter than the regular ones thanks to this forum.

789M is forged and 706M is not. Definitely get the 789M.

The wheels are the same width and same offset. If the guy at the dealer noticed a tyre shape difference it might have been because the Pirellis and Michelins will have a slightly different shape.

As neohh said, the 789m wheels are forged and about 4kg lighter for each wheel - definitely the better option to go for.

The salesman was downplaying the competition because he didn't have one on the lot. Total BS, and I bet he knew it.

Definitely a bunch of BS because the 789M and 706M wheels have the same widths up front (9.5) as well as rear (10.5) and like someone said, same offsets too. So the only difference is style and construction. The 789M being forged means they’re not only stronger but also lighter than the cast 706M which are very heavy wheels. Such a reduction in unsprung weight offers a considerable advantage in performance potential for cars that have the 789M.

First of all, thank you... to every single one of you. Yes, the comp. wheels are forged... I did know this but forgot to mention. This one was about the tire shape. Will for sure go with the comp. wheels and pray for Michelins.

Don't pray for Michelins, find the car you want and make sure it has them or continue looking, lots of Comps out there, I don't love the Comp wheels so bought an in stock Comp with Black 706 wheels and have been happy with the decision even though they came with Pirelli's, I will replace with Michelins when needed.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I will order a car later this year - thus that's why I wrote "pray" for Michelins.
