Brake Squeal
I have a 2021 M5Competition LCI with steel brakes. I had this issue of brake squeal with my 2019 Comp as well. It's only after the brakes actually warm up and come to a stop at a calm rate.
I will admit I have used them pretty hard at times but they aren't warped and are nowhere's near the end of their life as the car has only 11,000 miles on it. Has anyone tried anything that works if they had the same issue? Maybe getting the brakes and pads resurfaced? |

Have this issue as well, dealer claims it's normal. Haven't seen a proper fix yet

Irritating and frustrating. I've been there, on most of my rides, though ever so briefly with my LCI M5. (The night is young--I only have 2800 miles.) Comes with the territory of owning a performance vehicle I guess.
In the end, when I first heard "the squeal," I usually tried a few aggressive stops (including in reverse) to see if I could break up any dust build-up or glazing. That worked, but often only temporarily. Sometimes, I took off the brake pads and coated them with products designed to quiet pad vibration, e.g., CRC, Locktite, etc. Perhaps BMW has its own "proprietary" product for same. In most cases, that solution did work. But what always worked--changing pads. Didn't do it if the squeal wasn't unbearable and I was able to get used to it (especially if the sound didn't occur every time I applied the brakes). But the fix was a pretty solid one. Don't know how the dealer looks at that solution though, what with your M5 still under warranty. Oh, check out this thread if you haven't seen already: https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1515537&page=2 Good luck. Last edited by delta; 11-09-2021 at 08:23 PM.. Reason: Clarification |

This has been an issue since the early F10 days and there are countless threads on this forum as well as the other M forums. I consider it a "feature" of the car rather than an issue.
From what I can gather, light braking in daily use makes it worse. If you are fairly hard on them, they squeak less. Also, some have changed pads with success. What it does for warranty claims remains to be seen. I just took delivery of a 2022 LCI with carbon ceramics. Figured I'd give those a shot to hopefully have less squeal and less dust. 600 miles in and so far so good. |

I have 2021 with steel brakes. I took delivery of the car in March 2021. I have no squealing. I read all the brake squealing comments before purchase and I considered not purchasing the car because of this. I decided to roll the dice and order the car all things considered. Some people have the "feature" as someone called it and some don't. I have no issue. I do use the brake hold feature all the time. I was hoping BMW resolved the issue but I guess some people are still experiencing the "feature".

Some say it is just pad deposits and not uneven metal. If that is true, running a set of race pads for a day or 2 would wipe the rotor surface clean. I try to stand hard on the brakes regularly and notice more squeaking when I have not done that in a while.

Update: the brake squeal was deemed not normal by BMW North America, and they replaced all pads and rotors on the car.
My guess is the rotors got overheated and didn't cool properly. Luckily the brakes are as quiet as ever. I'm gonna try to keep it that way, and make sure they cool down properly after hard use. |
