Having second thoughts…

Hi there

North East Based, currently have a E63S Estate which is due to go back in October.

I tested the M5C and RS6 and have ordered the M5C in MBB. Amazing drive but it's noise was muted, even compared to RS6.

I thought I would be able to modify the exhaust, maybe with an X Pipe and remove the resonator to improve the noise, but the more I'm reading about this OPF crap, the more I'm worried I won't be able to do anything other than a map which I had a really bad experience warranty wise with my E63S so somewhat put off.

Order has only been in a few days, now wondering whether the latest M5C is a bit 'meh' and should I cancel order? I absolutely loved the 2018 I test drove as well.

Any current 2021 M5C owners reassure me?

Sorry to hear you are rethinking. The honest truth is, its not just the OPFs on the LCI, that are the problem. BMW have mapped out the pops and bangs totally. It is near silent, when you are not on it, its very disappointing. Still sounds good when you are winding it up, very V8 like, but its has definitely lost a lot of its character. Also, im pretty sure you cant even map the LCI yet, as nobody has unlocked the ECU, and even if you did map it, you have blown your warranty. MP Exhaust has not been available for a long time for the M5, in fact, i think it was only available for pre OPF cars, and there wasnt that many of them. Was out in my car yesterday [lci] and i was pretty miffed with the lack of noise/drama .

You are correct, it's gone off the website. Ask them about warranty if you put an exhaust on it? It shouldn't effect it, but best to confirm first. A map would obviously void the warranty, but if they confirm an exhaust won't, a lot of people go for Remus. My car is pre-opf, but I am looking at a 2022 order at the moment. I did also test a new RS6, and it's still not for me, much prefer the F90. Personally I wouldn't let the noise stop me getting the car I prefer, it's something that is customisable with an aftermarket exhaust.

I think it depends on the sound you are after, if you just want louder/deeper, then an exhaust is fine, as long as its a cat/OPF back system, so it wont void the warranty. But no exhaust will bring back the pops and bangs on an LCI, as its the mapping here that is the problem.

So contacted the dealer about exhaust options and he emailed me back to say that while the dealership would not officially approve a different exhaust, he would not foresee any warranty issues. I have that on email but not sure how much I would want to test it?

One other thing guys, the RS6 did have some burbles, it wasn't as good as the AMG but did have some and that was a 21 plate, so assume it has the OPF. It probably could be improved by BMW through a software update.

But all that aside, I am having this car by hook or crook, it may not be as engaging as the AMG but there is so much I love about it and I feel very fortunate to be even debating this stuff and slightly churlish given the world at this time.

I always dreamed of having a M5 and won't let this slight negative detract from being very grateful to be ordering one!

You should be fine with an aftermarket exhaust .... I've had aftermarket exhausts on my last 3 M5's including current 19' M5C with iPE cat-back with zero issues.

This has all been in the US ...

I don't know about you, but the main thing that put me off the RS6 was a lack of oversteer. The AMG and M5 4WD systems are so good. I think I'd miss not being able to stick it in RWD and have some fun every now and then. As for an exhaust, I think that would be fine if you have it on email, it's only an exhaust. Go for a Remus, you can pick up a full cat back system for around £3k.

Thanks, agree with you on the RS6 but I also had a hard time with the seats! I'm not a big guy but they felt narrow and hard and while the air suspension was great, the seats I found really uncomfortable.

I also found the drive chain to be miles better on the M5.

I can't imagine what it's like to have a dealer that loves the brand at least as much as the money. My local dealer may as well be selling mattresses.

Just to give you an idea what it will sound like with an exhaust...

It's in Japanese, but you get the idea.

Buy a 2018 without OPF. That's what I did and with the money saved you can mod the car to your hearts content.

Ok, dealer has come back with 2 choices:

1. Order Akraprovic exhaust for £5,900 through BMW and they will fit it as per order.

2. The Performance Exhaust is coming to UK in September and they are happy to approve me retrofitting it post delivery. Price to be confirmed but expected less than Akraprovic.

Any thoughts?

Can't go wrong with Akra.

Hi Mate,
Has the dealer said there is an MPE coming for the LCI ?. I would pick the MPE over Akra, which may not go down well here. Ive had MPEs before on previous cars, and they were spot on for sound, and warrantied by BMW of course

MPE doesn't have valves and the Akra does. Both will sound pretty similar and both will be very well made. I don't think you'd be able to tell much difference noise wise, but as a daily I'd probably go for the Akra as you can have the valves closed for quiet journeys. Can't go wrong with either though!
