M5 CS radiator potential debris damage ?

Curious with their location if radiators susceptible to damage from road debris like small stones. Would some sort of protective screen be worth doing? Haven't seen a car in person just wondering.

Damage? Yes, screen? No. You're just going to restrict air flow and anything that's going to hit the radiator hard enough to bend fins is going to rip right through that screen anyway. Realistically it's not going to be that bad unless you regularly travel to Mexico and ride people's asses. And even then at worst you'll have a slight decrease in cooling performance over the next few years. Just straighten the fins back up and repeat when needed.

Same bumper and radiator as the normal LCI M5. If you are that concerned, then go check out a 2021 M5 with as many miles as possible local to you, whether it be a car meet or dealer, and see what the radiators look like. I think it is of no concern personally.

I actually did have an issue with the auxiliary radiator getting damaged. It was when I had an m550 (which has a plastic honey comb grill whereas the f90 is pretty much exposed).

In my case a pebble or something hit the vertical cooling tubes and resulted in a messy coolant leak. Had to get the aux radiator replaced.

Even with that experience I'm not worried about the same thing happening on my m5… chalked it up to random bad luck. Could it happen- obviously yes… my guess is that the odds are slim, though.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Glad to know it is not an issue.

I had the same thing happen to my '21 M5C. There is a plastic frame that houses the auxiliary radiator. It has fins that are meant to protect the small vertical coolant passages. Unfortunately the alignment between the frame and the radiator isn't perfect as the auxiliary radiator's coolant passages are not perfectly straight. You have to get really unlucky, but it can definitely happen.

The auxiliary radiators are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.

I have protective grilles fitted to my 2019 M5 Comp lower rads and underneath tranny cooler.
I live in UK so any restriction to air flow is not a concern.
