Mine ticks on startup till it warms up a bit, sounds like valve train.

The cam adjusters cam tick, lifters, etc, until the oil has filled them up to take up the tolerance. I doubt everyone has bent rods.

Mcc420 has this car now and she flys!

Bent rod would be a different noise and it wouldn’t not go away as the rod would stay bent…

Wanted to chime in.
I also have, lets call it the tick.
Only during overnight/morning start up.
Lasts about 15 secs at initial cold start up, then maybe another 15 secs, till idle settles. - Am I worried, NOPE.
I bet if more people pop their hoods or do it in a garage so it echoes, they would hear it.
To me its just oil working its way through, is my train of thought.

You have a c63, you are used to the cold engine ticks. I used to run rotella t6 5w40 in my c63, it sounded better on cold starts and took some of the noise away.

0w30 is really thin oil… 0 is a winter oil. Lifters are probably draining down too much. I might try a 5w40 in it and see if that helps.

Had the car into the dealer recently. I asked them to check the engine cold start rattle ting noise… they scanned the engine and located the noise. Reply was high pressure fuel pump. When it starts, it can make a bit of noise till it warms up.

Figured I’ll let some of you know. If there is a tick that fades away after warm up and driving, it’s likely the fuel pump.

Did they replace the pump ? or they are just saying it is normal ?

There is a PUMA notice for this noise. After disconnecting the high pressure fuel pumps, the noise should go away. It’s a normal sound these high pressure pumps make till they warm up. I have the notice number in my file if anyone needs.

Completely agree ->: "Bent rod would be a different noise and it wouldn’t not go away as the rod would stay bent…." A bent rod is much more than a "ticking." More a quite loud, forcible rapping sound.

Just to set the record straight, people keep mentioning bent rods, but that’s almost never what happens. The bearings may wear down and spin in the rod end but if the rod were bent, you'd have a lot more issues, like a bent crankshaft or far worse. Bent rods typically happen from extreme detonation like a tune that’s out of control with too much boost, advanced timing, shitty gas. Rod knock itself is actually quite rare and it’s not the issue it’s made out to be on the forums. My engine makes a ticking sound from what sounds like one of the lifters to me. It goes away after about 5 minutes of running and I’ve noticed it when it gets cold out for instance, under 50°.

I’m not gonna say it’s normal, but it seems to be not problematic, rather more annoying than anything else. Heck, I’ve been a European car mechanic for over 40 years and I came on this forum because of this common tick and I wanted to see if whether or not it was the norm. Even mechanics derive their information from shared experiences.

People come on this forum to get useful information, but they end up getting the shit scared out of them by people who don’t have a clue what they’re talking about. A lot of people do know what they’re talking about and those are usually the ones that say the least. An empty barrel makes the most noise.

Uhh it sounds like a bent rod...shuddup!

I switched over to Motul 5w40 from BMW oil and the tick is NOTICEABLY quieter and ONLY Barely there on starts where the car has been sitting for more than a few days.

THICKER OIL!!

Thicker engine and transmission oil usually does quiet down otherwise expected engine and transmission sounds.
