I'm in the wireless industry. Wireless charging gets devices very hot, add to the situation the device is constantly being used while on wireless charging and no ventilation in the tray and your asking for the phone to overheat. Design flaw by BMW. They need to add some ventilation into the wireless charging tray.

I charge my phone with the cable and keep it in the arm rest. It doesnt get as hot when plugged in for charging.
