I put 9.5 liters in and the level shows at the top line. I will check again tomorrow.

I thought i someone mentioned a new filter housing that has a drain plug in the bottom to make it cleaner when removing. Anybody know the name or where to purchase that?

The prior M5 had such a drain. I think it was on the V10 version. Should fit.

Weistec has a billet version. You can source it direct or from places like IND.

Great write up, are you able to reset the oil indicator? I have been unable to using the press start button three times and then hold down the trip reset. the mileage area of the display just goes blank.

Can anyone tell me if the Castrol Edge 0W-30 A3/B4 European formula is still fine to use, even though it no longer has BMW's LL-01 certification?

I just went through a few weeks of back and forth with Porsche and Suncoast to get the correct oil for my Boxster.

I'll have to look into this. I have been getting the oil from ECS tuning. They send oil that is not quite BMW M5 spec......

Thanks Mike. After searching the internet I can't find anything to suggest a specific reason why the Castrol Edge 0W-30 A3/B4 European Formula (can currently buy on Amazon for $50/6 quarts) would be a problem for the M5, but it does not officially meet BMW's updated specs. If I go the BMW branded oil route, do I buy the LL-01 spec or the LL-01 FE spec 0W-30 oil? I have a 2018 M5.

I thought ECS was sending the LL-01 FE but was only LL-01......I doubt it is an issue. The dealer probably uses flavor of the day anyway. LOL.

Yeah, I have the same feeling that it doesn't matter at all. Anyone on here running 0W-40?

Just did my first oil change today with Motul specific 0w-30. Had an issue with taking the oil filter off, local autozone didn't have a 86mm (think thats the size) wrench so i needed up removing the alum belly pan to get closer to the filter to use a clam-shell type of wrench which worked well. 10.6 quarts / or 10 liters fills it perfectly.

You'll be perfectly fine. Engine will be perfectly fine. BMW will probably change their specs in a year making today's oil out of spec that you've been putting in the car since day one. Not much changes and it certainly won't damage the engine.

The first time I did I used a universal adjustable type. The issue was those ONLY go one way (take off) so I tightened it hand tight and waited the socket to check the torque. I was just about tight enough hand tight. It's 7.5 foot pounds if I recall (posted above somewhere). Certainly easy with the socket.

The second time I did the oil change, as I was taking OFF the filter housing (remember 7.5 foot pounds torque, so not tight), the 1/2 extension I was using broke off in the large 86 mm socket! LOL. Maybe I should have just left it hand tight LOL.

I'm getting ready for my first DIY oil change on the Boxster. That looks like more of a PITA.

I had an intermediate oil change done (crazy 30.000 km service interval) yesterday, and while the car was on the lift also noticed, and even my mechanic remarked on it, that there was no cover for the oil filter, exactly like you also noted.

Wonder if anyone has actually figured out if there should be a cover or not?

Thanks for the excellent DIY instructions, I might attempt it myself next time, although the amount of oil splash, with my mechanic cursing, made it quite a show!

I did not have a huge splash, loosen the filter a bit and let it drain and then take if off. Don't tip it because it will be full of oil.

Interesting I have seen videos of oil changes on some cars where the oil drains from the plug spot like a fire house spray....might be due to the thinner oils used today?? I will find out when I do the boxster. 0-40 oil.

Ok. That was a mess with the upside down oil filter cap. Worse than the angled upright cap on my E90 M3. No way to avoid a mess. I did let the oil drain a long time and I did pack shop towels around the sides. So I ordered the Weistec cap with drain plug.

I just did my 4-year oil change since I did not pay for additional maintenance at the dealership. This post was very helpful. I would recommend purchasing the BMW oil filter wrench. I did and it cost me $28.00 at my local dealership. I did have to buy a 27mm 6-point socket from Harbor Freight for around $4 and change. I also bought the Holt oil funnel kit from Harbor Freight. They have different adapters that mount to fill point on the engine worked great. Changing the oil was a piece of cake.
