Really hope they can put this M Xdrive on every bmw as an optional (of course)...BMW Canada is not giving us a rwd option anymore, so this will be the second best thing...

Well done BMW.
What next M6? The 6 series will now only be the 6GT. M8 is another case.

I need to see it in person to really give it a fair exterior assessment, so far so good though, LOVE the carbon roof. I hope to see some very unique colors in the line up. The interior and technology is "about damn time" awesome. 600 hp, 3.2 seconds 0-60 M car that seats 5, gets groceries and gets parked up front at valet stands.... I'M IN. Can't wait for them to be available

Some sort of special color
IND cosmetic kit (standard)
H&R HAS kit
Spacers
Exhaust
Carbon Fiber goodies

Thats my wishlist!

It's interesting that the rear tires on the Red car in the pictures are 295 while the blue one (and the spec. sheet) show 285. A little surprised that the rear tires are narrower than those on the current M5.

Not sure if this was posted earlier but here are some infos about prices.. i got this from carscoop

The BMW M5 will be available to order in September and German pricing starts at €117,900.

Early customers will have option of ordering the M5 First Edition which features a Frozen Dark Red Metallic exterior with shadow line trim, gloss black accents, and black 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels. The interior gets a modest makeover that includes piano black trim, M multifunction seats, and an individually-numbered plaque. Production is limited to 400 units and the model will cost an additional €19,500

€117,900 for Germany is worrying as it's just 3.000€ short on the X5M (€120,700)... if the same principle were applied in my country (Spain) the M5 would be priced at around €136,000 which would represent a €18.000 increase over the outgoing F10 !!! (122.000€)

With options, I would be looking at €150,000 which would be a "No go zone" for me ... time to look for Plan B

Lol, I noticed the same thing, i downloaded the high-res to get a look at it. One of the guys that saw a preview of the car said it for SURE had 295's out back and he wasn't lying

Unless you're racing on a road course, ITBs and high-revs are just bragging rights, right?

I agree with the original comment to an extent.
There was something particularly special about the M-cars of yore.
In particular, the M5s of the past had concrete links to BMW's racing ventures at the time. The E28 & E34 M5s used handbuilt powerplants descended from the BMW M1 supercar. The E39 M5's engine found widespread use in motorsport racing, and the E60 M5's V10 masterpiece was a result of the trickle-down effect of BMW's participation in Formula 1.
If I wanted to give the S63 powered F10 and F90 a break, at least the M6 racecar technically uses an engine derived from the S63, so at least there's still a link.
The point is, the M5 (and M-cars in general) was always about pushing the limits of motorsport/racing technology into a sedan/saloon car. The side-effect was that you got a really fast saloon, but the DNA from motorsport came first.

Does any of that matter during the commute to work? Probably not, and that's probably why gradually M-cars are becoming more generic, because BMW knows it can get away with it.
Why spend more money and R&D if the consumer won't notice a difference and only cares about numbers?
It's the sad reality, but there's something honest and special when a BMW M product lives up to its name and heritage, even if few can appreciate it.

The bespoke engine and the 8,250 rpm redline what drew people to the car. It was what made an M car stand out from the rest. M cars are about the driving experience. The engine is what provides the most experience to the driver.

It's going to suck. Hopefully, they don't tank as bad as the M6's currently do.

Still can't touch the top Tesla
Just curious to know what you mean by 'still can't touch the top tesla'? A gas engine will never be able to touch the 0-60 time of a fully electric motor.

Also notice the First Edition car has no chrome on the door handles vs the Marina Bay Blue car. Wonder if this will be an option down the road or if this is an individual only request. Or maybe part of later competition package since that will obviously black out everything like this First Edition (grills, side grills, exhaust, and probably badging).

I'm pretty sure it's standard. You have a rear-wheel drive mode though, where it send 100% of torque to the rear wheels.

Exactly.
And it was a rhetorical question so you just made my point.

BMW could've [with the E60] just as easily (and with less cost) modified an existing engine and slap an "M steptronic" transmission and it would've been just as fast. But that takes something away from the uniqueness of it doesn't it?

Probably because this has awd so they felt anything larger was pointless. Which sucks for anyone intending to run in 2wd mode.

So the 19s are cast, can anyone confirm that the 20s are forged?

That's funny a 911 Turbo S does and traps almost 10 mph more in the quarter too lol.

I love these threads.... I always just wonder why I'm the only one who hasn't already been able to drive the car already to evaluate its merits.

And everybody moaning about the DCT (RIP)... let's not pretend that the DCT didn't have some warts on it. Driving my DCT back to back with a Porsche PDK makes the DCT feel prehistoric to me. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but I'm certainly open to trying out the ZF unit in this application before I complain too much.

My $0.02. Very excited to see it and hopefully drive it before I form too many opinions. I'm optimistic about everything except the launch color
