Shift-times: SMG---80 milliseconds, ZF in 335i----100 milliseconds. Don't tell me you can really tell the difference of 20 milliseconds, because if you did, I would have to call |

Yeah, that's why for all the ppl in this thread arguing for their MT's, there are tons more that have said on this Forum that they went into their BMW dealerships looking to order an MT 335i, and after their test drives of the 6AT 335i (w/ Paddle Shifters), they were so blown away with the ZF 6AT tranny that they walked out ordering and/or driving home in their 6AT 335i's. A lot of these ppl on here are just die-hard MT fans and wouldn't drive AT's...until they get a little older of course. It's nothing more than personal preference to most while others just think the 335i's ZF 6AT tranny is just like all the other "slush boxes" out there (which we know to be false ).

And yes, I dont have a 335, but I have a step, and Ive owned 6 MTs before, and at times I do miss the MT, but most of the time, I do not, I just drive in M mode and change gears when ever I want, and I dont even have to take my foot off the floor Its heaven!

Seriously. Everyone is going to defend their own purchase and everyone has different opinions on what they want. Both have pros and cons, but add me to the 6mt list.

I had a 335 slushbox loaner this weekend and was amazed but its performance. Auto trannies have come a long way. But nothing will replace a 6 speed.

So what exactly in my post was misinformation? I didn't even mention shift times, and nor did I say that sequential manual transmissions were better or worse than automatics. What I did say was that they are different, in response to a post stating that the M5, M3 and various Lamborghinis and Ferraris have automatic transmissions.

For most people it's a personal preference, and I will leave that at that.
But for those of you saying it's not a "race car" and don't want the "computer shifting for you", do you also remove the power steering? What about the anti-lock brakes? The processing power of a modern car far exceeds that of the computing power of the first space shuttle. You are interacting with computer components each and every time you enter the car. So why does the transmission choice bring such a heated debate? In F1 cars, it's reasonable to assume they would want the fastest shifting transmission. In that case, it's SMG / DSG. No one argues or questions that. It comes down to personal cars with people who are enthusiasts, those who are posers, and those who don't give a flying fuck. I think that some of this negativity towards modern day autos (and I'm putting DSG and the like in here, because the car shifts "automatically" whether or not there is a clutch or torque converter) is that this racing technology has gotten so good and so comfortable that you can put it into a daily-driver car. This means that anyone can get a 300hp twin-turbo car that shifts in 100milliseconds. You used to be able to brag if you could drive a manual that you were quicker. It required some skill that not everyone possessed. Now high performance is available to anyone with an AMEX card. Now most people don't care, and they pick whichever transmission they want, but then there are some people vocal one way or another, and that's how these flame wars start. We are in a transition period with transmissions, and the future is scary to some. I believe in the future, the manual transmission will still exist, but they will only really be seen in enthusiasts' play cars. The S2000, MX-5, Boxster, etc... that you drive on the weekend will still have manual transmission options, but more people for daily drivers will opt for the new generation of computer-controlled transmissions. Me personally, for a car I drive everyday, I would like to have the ZF auto in the 335i. But for a toy on the weekend, I have the urge to drive the 6MT and would want something to cure my "fix".

Coming from a e46 SMG M3, I still missed driving a Stick so much that I knew my next car was going to be a Manual. Even though I havent done the CDV mod yet, i'm enjoying the MT and don't think I will ever get any other type of transmission again.

I guess I'm a control freak. For me, the issue boils down to control. I don't care how I control it, as long as I can - 100% of the time.
I have a problem with anything that takes away my control in an obvious way. And as good as the 335 ZF auto is, it still doesn't offer the level of control I want. But even IF the ZF Auto were a true automated manual - giving the level of control of, say, an F1 clutch in a Ferarri - there is still the problem of the paddles in the 335, which can be awkward to use when turning sharply (try using 'em through a U-turn!) I might have gone for the Auto ZF if: 1. The transmission were a bona-fide automated manual. 2. The steering ratio and paddles were as usable as a Ferarri's. But since they weren't, and aren't. It's MT all the way for me.
