I saw "lease byouts" in the distant past, but never really thought that was a much used thing. I can see how that restriction is reasonable.

Second waver, at least I think that’s what I am. I was the second owner of my two previous M5s, an e39 and an f10. I purchased a 2023 CPO f90 M5c last week and will be picking it up this coming Friday. I’m looking forward to getting to know the car. The only time I’ve driven an f90 was on the track at the performance center in SC.

I am not understanding the definition of waves. My M5 journey started in 2016:

- 2016 M5 Comp 3 year unicorn lease
- 2019 M5 Comp 3 year lease but did early turn in
- 2021 M5 Comp 3 year lease - going to hold on it till I die

So what am I? First wave?

You are absolutely first wave. I think a somewhat loose definition for “first wave” for the purposes of our discussion are owners who acquired the F90 relatively close to its launch/being the “new” M5, or, who acquired their M5 new in the case of multiple M5s. You’ve actually had two of them when/close to when each car was “new.” Essentially someone who acquired the car new during the current (at the time) or upcoming MY; i.e. a 2019 acquired in 2018/2019.

A good example of second wave would perhaps (loosely) be someone who is now acquiring, for example, an ‘18/‘19/maybe ‘20 MY F90 as their first F90.

I have a similar path to yours. MY ‘19 acquired new in October 2019, traded (~6 months early) this past May for my MY ‘22.

In addition to how it was acquired, new or used, there’s also an attitude shift. Some of the first wave will always be around. And maybe keep the car forever.

But most of the first wave are new car transients. The newest bestest thing is part of their car journey, and are now onto better and faster.

Second wave frequently this is their dream car. Maybe out of budget new, but now they can get one. The most DIY’s come from this group. It’s just a different attitude.

That’s an excellent point, Shawn. This car is likely to create some form of a paradox for a lot of us (who always want to the latest and greatest as you mentioned) versus loving this car so much (and it being the last ICE M5) and wanting to keep it forever.

I’ll likely do both — G90 will likely end up being my DD, but as I’ve said on here recently, I don’t think I’m ever giving my LCI up.

Thank you, Guys!

I am the same way as you. I’ll buy out my current F90 lease and keep it but still move on to the G90.

All first world problems!
