Wait... first oil change was when? at 4500 miles or 2700? On my 19 F90, I've already had two in 9 months. One for the break-in 1093miles (Nov 2019), then the 2nd one was at 6453miles (Jun 2020) oil change was at the determination of the car onboard systems. on my f80 I did break in at 1200 and next call was 10k for oil.
I wonder if your car detected the fact that it wanted an oil change based on other issues that were going on and that's what made it that much shorter of a duration after the break-in |

The newer cars, the oil change is determined by the onboard systems.

I fully understand - as stated my break in service was at 2200 miles (1000 over the “recommended miles”) and then at 4500 miles the car went back for another oil change due to a message displaying and dealer Calling me.

So... if this is related to an oil change issue. But you need to figure out what the exact issue is. I am betting BMW sets thresholds before they do a no push back on no warranty coverage based upon the issues they find, especially when it comes to the motor. M powertrains have tight tolerance levels. A dealership must submit all information for BMW NA to cover the warranty costs. The maintenance is already paid for when you buy the car as it's included in the based price. A dealership isn't going to deny you service as it's already been paid for. Your dealership may have gone to bat for you but at the end of the day its BMW NA that cuts the warranty check or terminates your warranty. The car determined it needed another oil change at 4500 miles as its oil was dirty/ filter was shot. The dealership performed the work. Herein lies the issue… Without a doubt, your car has a defect, or the metal buildup caused the problem. In either case, it was exacerbated by you driving it more. Then if you drive the car as you stole it… compounding… BMW NA is like what came first, the chicken, or the egg. Suppose the car was brought in at 1200, oil change. Then again at 4500, then hard fail at 5,700. That falls either on the dealership error or a manufacturing defect and BMW covers it. This is the grey area... BMW knows that the cars need that 1200-mile service as the metal build up causes other issue as the motors breaks in (the longer it's in the system the more damage it causes- the oil system is not closed- thus why when you hit something and fuck up the cooler at the bottom it can cause a ton of issues as the metal goes everywhere and the only way to save the motor is to shut it down within seconds – and in these cases it's always a 50/50), then by driving it beyond the threshold it was compounded. I'm assuming that "hard spot" is the result of that issue as they are like negligence on the driver. Probably messed up a cylinder/block or caused something to seize. Most modern cars have a "black box"… BMW is like… the motor needs replacement and not a repair… so it's a brand-new motor delivered from the factory. That's not cheap. BMW is like we recommend 1200. You did 1000 over this with metal shavings floating within the motor; it would have only gotten worse. The dealer is just going to follow the service as at the time of maintenance, the system hadn't failed and like you said, they wouldn't have known it was going too. BMW NA engineers will look at all the data. It sounds like at the 4500-mile service... if the dealership called you and was like hey... you need to get it in... the onboard system for sure was telling you each time you drove it … to take it in, then sent an SOS to your dealership, then they called you. That could be strick two in BMW's eyes. You're in for a fight – Warranty is void if they find the owner to be at fault. What some would do… is if the car runs to take it back. Get a good helmet .. adjust the seat and ensure your tray table is in the upright position... then pay your insurance deductible and don't say shit to an adjuster as you take the car to a different 3rd party shop. You mentioned it a lease… Last I heard I think it has gap insurance, review your contracts talk to your attorney then figure out what is best. Ask if BMW will go 50/50 on repairs… If you sell it be upfront with the next buyer. Last edited by DocWeatherington; 07-18-2020 at 08:25 PM.. |

May be a moot point if now in the hands of BMW NA as you know .. very little budge in them once they've taken a specific position on a warranty claim.

Still feel you should go straight to bmw NA direct instead of through your current dealer.

My break-in was at 1200 and first oil change was around 2000-2500 on the odometer. I was irritated that I had to go back to the shop so quickly.

I think a best case scenario is BMW NA gives the OP some sort of goodwill gesture (reduced cost to fix) to address the issue. I’d be surprised if they honor the warranty given the OP didn’t follow the required break-in service timing. |

Break-in service includes an oil change and changing of a few different fluids. The second one is based upon the onboard diagnostics system saying we need to do it again - the oil/filter is dirty. Once broken in the system could allow for 10k plus before it needs to be changed. Again, were are talking a high end sensitive but strong almost 700hp crank german motor Last edited by DocWeatherington; 07-19-2020 at 06:41 AM.. |

I'd ask BMW NA myself. Dealers tend to try and profit on everything. I wouldn't put it over them to try and say that its not warranty covered. They make more on customer service than on warranty work.

Again, what will it hurt to ask BMW NA? It'll cost nothing to ask them.
