Unofficial info is that this was done via ECU not mechanically

Ok cheers John. I thought that was the full system (I.e. cat back) not just the back box? If that's the case then very annoying as its means I can't make any changes to the exhaust!

Unlikely that you get a CEL from just the axle back. You'd definitely get a CEL if you install the X pipe on an OPF car, Akrapovic even say so on their website.

Whats even more interesting/annoying, is that ive heard that UK cars, even fitted with OPFs, and have had some pops and bangs, have gone in for service, and come out even quieter than when they went in. I dont know if this is 100% true, but if BMW are downloading a new map so to speak to meet new noise/emission regs etc, how annoying is that ?, and is it even legal ?, taking away what most folks deem to be their favourite part of the experience ?. All getting a bit murky indeed, you cant seem to have anything these days, all a bit sad really ???

Not looking good for the new M3/4 with this new legislation, all cars are getting this, makes me think this could be my last "M".

Having said that. My 2020 doesn't pop.. it does burble some though but not enough to really bother me. But then again I haven't put exhaust and DP's on it yet

I must admit.. I'm also not really fussed by the pops and bangs. I'm with you on the deep/throaty sound. That's all I really want... Unfortunately for me (and us EU guys) we're f*(ked. We can't even change the exhaust without the dash lighting up like a Xmas tree!

I had my Akrapovic axle back installed yesterday. No CEL or any error lights so far and to be honest I'm not expecting to have any. The only reason why you'd get a CEL from an axle back is if you don't connect the valve lines.
Initial impressions are the exhaust has a throatier sound at low rpm and the pops are a bit more pronounced (my car already had the burble and pops). Sound will probably improve after a few hundred miles on it. I'll try to get a proper external GoPro mic with a windguard, before I make a video.
