Thanks to the OP for taking the time and effort to post this.
Questions to anyone that has completed this DIY............how long for the complete process................and is it an easy one man operation, or is two advisable, and if it's two at what point/steps would they be needed since all I've got is the wife and her patience span is about a nano-second when shopping is not involved. Thanks in advance.

It is a two person install if you want to make it a million times easier and all she really is needed for is taking the trunk off, putting the new one on, and holding it while you adjust it later on.
Really no more than 20min needed for her help total. Just take your time and done break anything. Also lay out a soft place to put the old trunk when you take it off.

For the trunk I would set aside 4hrs and take your time and have all the proper tools/drill bits. We did it in 3hrs but he knew what he was doing.
The hood took 2 but half of that was getting a piece from the bottom pan that I dropped and figuring out how to get the windshield washers out (push piece in closest to headlights and there is another little tab on the other side to push in). Full write up tomorrow.

Need Help from '08 Owners
Since these trunks come with the locking latch unit already cut out in the mold, those with '09 and older models will need to either add the lock or fabricate a plug.
The plug is cheesy, and homey don't do cheesy. So I'm considering adding the lock. The question then becomes exactly what part(s) are necessary to make the locking latch unit fully functional. And what about a key(s)? '08's I assume use the key encapsulated in the fob. To retrofit '09+ vehicles it seems to me key(s) would need to be ordered to match the lock. This is a diagram of the trunk and locking mechanism. If someone with an '08 that is about to install their trunk using this DIY could validate all of the lock parts they can visually detect (and possibly post a pic of how it mounts) it would be a big benefit to those of us like me that are considering this option. I'm still a bit honked that this bomb was dropped without warning, but now it's about making the best of it. Thanks in advance.

I am not seeing on the iCarbon duck tail CF trunk where I would need to add a lock or plug (since I have an 09). Can someone highlight; add a pointer/arrow to the pic or something? Sorry in advance for not see "Waldo" in the pic, I suck at those. I appreciate it. Thx.
Also, how tall from the bumper to the tip of the duck tail is the trunk? Thx... |

The locking latch would go in the slot on the far right.

Mine is a 09 and has the lock in the trunk.
From what I understand it is 2009 production (mine was late 08) and it was with those that had the cig lighter delete.

If it were me I would just get a key lock off ebay and put it on.
It will bolt right up and do everything it should do except unlock unless you order one (expensive) or have a key made (expensive too).

I think if you're going to do something then do it right.........and the first time, if possible. I just need to know what "right" parts are involved before I begin. One would assume if you are buying a lock that a key would come with it. I'll probably have to talk to the local guy at the BMW parts counter to see if he knows anything about what is needed for the OEM locking latch. In the end if I need to have a locksmith make a mold for a key, then that's what I'll do. Definitely a hassle, but I'm just one of those stickler's that likes attention to detail. It separates one car from another.
