even that's better than my story....
[QUOTE=arbitrage]Its nice to have such generous parents, mine only bought me an 89 civic during high school (1995) and then a 2001 civic during university. Still I'm forever grateful and am not complaining.
Here's what my parents bought me....wait, they didn't buy me squat!! I couldn't even get a co-sign out of them. But, it taught me to appreciate my sweet Ford Escort followed by a better Honda Civic Coupe. Back on topic....I had a STi for a short while. I didn't enjoy it much, but that was mostly because it was ugly as sin (my opinion) and I didn't want the attention. By the way, the 335 is about as fast as an STi so you know what my recommendation would be....if the OP was a bit older with more experience. Get a less expensive car like a Civic Si or something that won't cost so much when it gets wrapped around a pole LOL.

wow im gonna have to break out the violin for some of you guys...the kids parents are offering him a car for good grades, would you honestly have turned that down at his age? life is not fair or equal for everyone and just because you drove a steaming heap doesn't mean everyone should have to. he has his whole life ahead of him to get that feeling of accomplishment you're all going on about. life is short, let him have his fun.

what he said. It's funny that even though we're all "grown-ups" here, some of us prefer to act like children. All he asked for was opinion on which car he should gets and all of a sudden he gets criticized... |

He came in with an attitude of "I can afford both because I'm good at high school" not saying I would have turned down a car, but if things were given to me rather than me working hard for them, I wouldn't have the drive to work hard. for someone to be successful, there needs to be a correlation between hard work and rewards, which can be developed in many ways. High school is not hard, there are TONS of people who get all A's, and many of them aren't all that bright (not reffering to OP, but I went to school with some STUPID kids that got a better GPA than me, looking at where I am and where they are now.... maybe GPA isn't that important in HS ) |

It's not just about horsepower, but how powerful your horses are.

At your young age i suggest the WRX Sti its just more suited b/c in all honesty do u see any thirty year old driving a WRX STI? you will always have time to drive a BMW when you are more mature. I view highschool students driving a bmw as "parents bought their car" get STI drive it and have fun with it and buy a bmw later on yourself you will love it a lot more

Those two are very different cars. I owned 06 STi and traded in for e92 coupe 3weeks ago. One is 4WD and other is RWD. I wouldn't recommend STi for first car. It has power that may be too much for first car and especially someone young. It's your choice. You will like both cars as I did.

I would prefer a BMW. I am 100% sure that if he got an STI all his friends would tell him to mod it and race other cars with it. The STI is more of a trouble maker while the bimmer is like a hot chick with a playful attitude. |

Test drive both and see which you like. but I agree with what others said about young drivers.. off top of my head, that 18 year old who crashed into a wall in his M3 and killed himself and injured two of his friends.

i would say BMW, not because of the badge or prestige that comes with it, mainly because of safety. Im not saying your a bad driver or anything but shit happens and what matters first is safety. Whats the point of a 400..500hp STI if someone hits you (or you hit them) and you cant drive anymore.

I have a WRX (not STi) and a 330i. Given the choice I'd take the bimmer everytime. That said, I have absolutely loved the Subaru. It's 5 years old and not one iota of trouble in that time. It's bulletproof.
They are really different cars though. The bimmer is smoother, more comfortable and more luxury. The STi is raw, harshly sprung and somewhat frantic, but the full-on AWD grip, will save your ass at the limit. Honestly, neither is ideal as a first car. A 328i would be my advice. Quick, but nothing to get to into too much trouble...

If you ski or need awd go with the STI. You wont be able to take the 335i to Mammoth.

I started with an 85 Camry (16) --> 90 Legend coupe (18) ---> 03 Highlander (22) --> 07 335i coupe (25) The BMW was the first car I bought myself. But I worked hard and waited till I graduated from college and got a good job. Its all up to you my young friend. I agree with most people on this forum that 300 HP car is a little too much car for such a new not necessarily young driver. Its not that we are hating on you, its just from experience. Man I loved my Legend all 2.7L and all 160 HP / 162 Torque....they have civics and VW bugs with more power....lol |

I believe that a 16 year old can have/drive a BMW,if:
*He's been driving for atleast a year(here in texas learners permits are issued at 15) *He understands the limits of a BMW,and that he knows how to control the BMW.(A BMW,or any car for that matter,is like a loaded gun,if you dont know how to handle ANY gun properly correctly, then you have to potential to KILL someone, but if handled correctly, you, and the people around you will be safe,so what im saying,is that if you know how to control the vehicle, and how to drive it correctly, and responsibly you,and the people around you are fine). Thats my two sense, and not to be cocky,my post has made the most sense in my opinion. Xavier L. |

ok.. first of all i have saved 20,000 myself from working/investments/b-day gifts and stuff. I think that is all i can do at my age without a car. SEcond.. My school is different than many other schools that u think. If i got a bmw in my school its not a big deal. In Irvine, Ca there are tons of kids who get way nicer cars so its just a completely different environment than when maybe you guys were in highschool. Also, my family has had a lot of bmw's and like what xclozano was saying, i know a lot about bmw's and know their limitations and how they handle and drive. my sister got a 3 series for her first car and now she has an x5. My school is filled with expensive cars like escalades, range rovers, TONS of 3 series, audis, mercedes, and a porsche so it wouldn't really be like im showing off. And when i said if i get good grades i can afford it, i didn't mean it in a cocky way at all im sorry if that came out wrong or what but i didnt mean it like that at all. Im just wondering, if i end up getting A's, which car would be better or more fun for a first car....?
