Def not essential however they are very good in their own right PLUS you will get more out of the new series by understanding the back stories and having more empathy towards the characters. Ryan Pilkington for example (Ferida’s replacement) is a young boy in the first series (9yrs ago) - same actor too.

She has the same name (Chloe) and would be about the right age. Didn’t really think of it in terms of skin colour but now you mention it, if Chloe was white then I don’t think such a link would work. I think Gates’ wife was white but could be wrong.

I think it would be taking things too far if she was Gates’ daughter

You’re right, the wife was white and if you ever saw Shaun of the Dead, the same actress was the girlfriend in that film.
