great deal on transmission kit
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...24118612901kt1
Great company and great price on tranny kit, $245, $280 with zf fluid, but the Rowe appears to be the ZF brand by the manufacturer. I bought 10 liters, plan on refilling first to flush, then do the pan/filter/refill to get out as much old dirty fluid as possible. Then on to stage 1 or 2 tuning. Bought a home depot 1-gallon sprayer, cut off the spraying tip and molded a poly line for a right angle out let out of the sprayer hand valve, should make filling simple. |

My understanding (I could well be wrong) is that changing transmission fluid isn't like changing engine oil. You can't just drain it out and put new stuff in. It would be worth finding out for sure before you go the DIY route.

Yes, anyone doing this should follow the ZF instructions, how to do it and how often based on your driving style. The drain and refilled prior to changing out the pan and filter is to get some of the old fluid out of the converter and heat exchanger. This will be done per ZF instructions as well. I have 70K miles on mine, so I am doing this as well as plugs. If all goes well, will do an intake and tune.

Did the service several weeks ago, went well. Got the parts from https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...24118612901kt1.
Used the ZF pan and Rowe fluid, looks like they produce the zf fluid. They had liters on sale for under $12. I drained the fluid, refilled, and ran the zf recommended fill process to semi-flush out the converter and cooler, about 3 liters. They did the pan change out and refill, about 5 liters. Use a Home Depot $10 sprayer, cut off the spray nozzle and added a peice of heat formed poly pipe, to fill the tranny, works well. |

The change is straight forward, I semi-flushed the converter as well. Get the temperature right, I used a laser thermometer, cycle through P/R/F, and just fill until it comes out the fill hole. ZF kit is $340, and the Rowe Fluid Kit is $280, Rowe apparently makes fluid for ZF.

The filter is built into the sump so it would be like changing your engine oil but leaving your old filter place....just doesn't make sense.... Zf on their instructional video counts a service as including changing the sump/filter... Is this garage definitely zf approved?! Ring zf in Nottingham and ask for your closes protech garage , Noel is a pro-tech garage.. |

I dropped mine off to him around half8, picked up around 4ish and he gave a 320d to get about in so u cud always turn it into a day trip to bham if your not local I think it'd be a false economy to go in to change the oil but not the filter...just doesn't make sense! |

Sump replacement/oil service
After owning more that 6 Bmws with the 6 speed ZF gearbox, I am convinced of the necessity of replacing the oil/sump. Every time I replaced the oil/sump I could notice the gearbox changed gears smoother, especially in lower gears, and even mpg has improved. On a GA6HP26 in my previous 330d the mechatronic sleeve was leaking, so the garage replaced it. Not to mention that the sumps that came out always seem to have a lot of fine metallic powder/fillings stuck to the magnetic traps in the sump, and also very fine “gold” like glitter in the oil when exposed to light from torch. The garage I use now have a flush machine which flushed all oil out while refilling new at the same time. Amazing. My 2013 F11 530d with 79k on the clock started having delayed shifting with a bump when stopping at traffic light. Replaced sump/filter and oil to the tune of 370£+vat, including the flush, and for the last week car has been smooth once again. The garage are in Beckenham, South East London, they are called CB Motors BEckenham. Think they also have a loan car available and definetly know what they are doing.

Interested to know what folks think about this all inclusive gearbox oil change?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-518d-...-/323259160861 Seller appears to be using ZF OE parts and has a 100% feedback. |

The price is keen, very close to what I paid for genuine OEM ZF filter and 8 litre of ZF Lifeguard 8 on its own.
If I were you I'd give them a call and ask them to run you through the procedure to establish if they are following the ZF process. There is enough detail on the thread and within the videos to understand the procedure and make an assessment of the garage. I would then also confirm that OE = Genuine ZF parts. There are a few other suppliers of the pan and personally I'd only use a genuine ZF pan. For oil I'd only use genuine ZF lifeguard 8 or the Shell equivalent. There are a few alternative oils brands now however personally I'd stick to the known brands. Last edited by gtthree; 05-16-2020 at 04:05 PM.. |

Just for everyone's benefit I went ahead and took the punt on the eBay listing. Booked the service for Saturday and was a bit late but they checked me in quickly and took my car in straight away.
The oil that came out was black and burnt, which is not good. Car is currently at 104k and they said this seal for life BS is BMW corporate. Anyway, they let the oil drain for a bit, took the sump out, replaced with ZF sump and fitted back. Car was level on a ramp and they filled her back with some ZF 8 dark green oil. Took temp readings, which were too high, so had to let it cool down a bit. Went through the gear changes including reverse. Refilled the oil to max and I was out in about 90 min. These guys have been doing transmissions for over 10 years and were based in Leyton before expanding to their current base. They had over 150 ZF sumps in storage and are doing this eBay listing as a way to promote their services and get more people in. In all honesty, I can't tell the difference because my gear shifts were smooth before the oil change anyway and since the oil was burnt I am happy I had it done. He did suggest another oil change in the next 30k miles so not sure what was going on there but we will see. |

The ZF kit, (pan, fluid, bolts, plug) is $276 at FCPeuro now. ZF pan with Liquid Moly oil is $144, but is an aftermarket oil that is approved.
I would go with the ZF oil to be on the safe side. When I did mine I refilled twice to get alot of the old fluid exchanged, twice with about 5 liters each, using the Rowe brand. |

Thank you. I was wondering in the UK, how much were people charged at Autoktaft in Solihull. Someone was saying £350 plus VAT. I wanted to know if £350 plus VAT included the oil and filter or labour only.
