Once you're in, you're never really out!
We shall see how that goes. Thank you for entertaining me for the last hour and letting us live vicariously through you. I am glad to see your still taking stunningly beautiful and spread out road trips. As I've certainly told you about your other trips before, I love to see owners enjoying the hell out of these cars, and even more so as a family. Thanks for sharing another journey with all of us. That part of the country is so beautiful!

I've talked about the differences on my other travel posts - alot. I'd be glad to share more on the thread referenced above when you finish it. I don't want to be this here. But, yes, it's a large car. It's long. But, all-wheel steering makes it feel smaller much of the time. |

Thanks for this post! I just swapped a 19 M5 (non Comp) with 19” wheels for a 23 M5 Comp with 20” (275 front/285 rear) Michelin summers on it. I previously ran the 2019 with the regular rims swapping Pilot Summers with Michelin Pilot Alpin tires once it got into Nov as the summers were terrible even in cold weather, and they worked fine. Based on the review of the Michelin AS Pilot Sports in the very helpful video above, suspect they will fit my current rims and work good enough in the relatively mild Philadelphia winters, with occasional snow use driving to either downtown Philly or Trenton to get to NYC. Any thoughts either way would be appreciated.

Hey everyone, I wanted to circle back to my thread and provide an update.
Firstly, thanks to all for the invaluable advice and help, these were critical in helping me go for a winter tire set. Also, thanks to those who offered to sell me their sets, even though the transactions didn’t work out. I ended up going for a square set of 275/40R-19 Vredestein Wintac Pro XL tires and I could not be happier about the choice. Over the past 2 days, I have been driving a lot in the snow (I live in the Midwest) with ~4 inches of snow on the road. The tires were stellar in their performance on snowy roads and cold conditions. I would totally recommend this setup to others. Happy holidays to all!

Before I ask my question, I want to say that the Verdesteins that I got last year were perfect on my car. The drive in the snow was very comfortable. Since we’re now back in the tire swapping season, I just took my car to Discount tire for a swap. They indicated that they can’t do the swap because the rear tires are rated at 105 (vs. OEM’s 107) and that it won’t be considered safe to swap, which is why they couldn’t do it. Last year, I did the swap at a BMW dealership and they didn’t mention it. Is this really a concern? I drove ~2K miles on them in the winter last year with no issues.

Unless you are loading your car to its max curb weight and asking for its maximum performance at that weight, don’t worry. Tire shops have liability. Some are pickier than others.

Thank you! Definitely not loading the car.

While pbonsalb probably isn’t my biggest fan on here, I couldn’t have said it better myself. I agree with him 100% and he is absolutely correct. Some will not do it for liability reasons alone. Interestingly, my local dealership had no problem with this whatsoever. Wikipedia tells me that the parent corp of DT operates tire stores in 38 of the lower 48, and “is considered the largest retailer of tires and wheels in the world.” As a corporation that large, their legal department exists accordingly. But, to answer your question, you can definitely go one speed rating and one load rating lower in the winter without issue. I’ll be doing changeover to my SottoZero IIIs in the next couple of weeks as our temperatures drop, and as mentioned last year, they are in fact one load rating and one speed rating below the OE star marked PS4Ss (and the P Zeros for that matter).

I decided to make an appointment with a nearby BMW dealership who will be charging $200 for the swap + alignment. A little pricey but I’d rather have it done properly.

I actually don’t think that’s too bad. My dealer charges $450 just for the alignment on M cars. Plus, you won’t have to deal with the swap. Also, remind me — did you mount the Vredsteins on your existing wheels or do you have a complete set of tires already mounted to another set of wheels? Keep us posted and let us know how it goes!
