Ciaranob, for my clients that have spouses with different (later) morning schedules, the loud cold start is certainly annoying, so I see where you're coming from. Consider, though, that it doesn't just serve an emissions purpose. It helps heat up the turbos and get the oil circulating so you don't really heat shock the parts under highest thermal stress when you put the car under load. Even if it would be possible to code out, it seems like this would lead to much shorter life of expen$ive components...
