N55 Wastegate DC% logs
Interesting stuff:
At the same stock boost pressure, it runs a lot higher wastegate DC% than the n54 which peaks out at around 35% in similar conditions. This suggests that the wastegate spring is softer, the wastegate solenoid bleed smaller, the turbocharger has less capacity or a combination of the three. For comparison, this Wastegate DC% curve in a n54 would yield around 12-13psi. Shiv |

Most these findings on the new N55, seems to prove that the N54 is a much stronger engine.

Hopefully it isn't less capacity. Hopefully they just decided to throw in an extra hurdle or two via hardware limitations that would discourage a percentage of the casual owners. With the N54 is was so easy to throw on a piggy. If it requires adiditonal hardware swaps maybe they figure they can cut down on tuned n55's by a good amount?

shiv, so the outlook of stock vs stock tuned, the engine output seems to steer to less power than the n54 due to possible turbo output...question is, does it look like a turbo upgrade would be much easier to do on the n55? im not sure what the hardware is like on that engine and to me it would seem logical that upgrading the turbo should be a lot sooner and easier than the n54.
i guess i just can't wait to solidify the decision to keep my car or get a 135i with 7speeds :-) teri

1. You have half the intake plumbing 2. You have half the exhaust plumbing 3. You have half the number of turbochargers and their supporting hardware such as coolant and oil lines For one, you *should* have more space in the engine bay to work with, less plumbing to deal with. The fuel pump is the same as the one used in N54 engines. So, *theoretically* it should be easier from hardware stand point to upgrade the turbo on the N55. Now, software wise, noone really knows but I have high confidence in the tuners. |

any reason why you cant just replace it with a better twin scroll? I dont see why not.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but does anyone know what type of TwinScroll they are using in the N55? Couldn't it be upgraded to a Garrett GT35R Twin Scroll? Or something similiar?

Perhaps this is an indication that you will need to swap out turbo hardward to safely produce more boost on the N55 as it seems like that twin scroll is working pretty hard already with the duty cycles.

HHmm. I did the muffler delete yesterday and my 1/4 times suffered today. Seems like it needed to launch at higher rpms for the car to actually lower my 60' times. And my 1/4 trap speeds were lower by almost 2-3 mph.
Pre MD I would launch at 1500rpm and today I had to launch around 2krpm. Any thoughts?

I'll take some later, but it does sound legit. But I'm just not liking how much my 1/4 dropped...

Quick Update:
Very productive weekend so far. Just got logging/viewing access to all the CAN channels necessary for v4 tuning logic: -Actual dbw throttle -Oil temp -DME boost target -DME actual boost before throttle blade -Air intake temp The CAN logic is a bit different from that of the n54 so this job was harder than expected. The scaling is also different on many of the channels which came as a surprise. But so far, I'd say we are 80% of the way to have a fully functional v4 tune for the n55. With autotuning to follow a few weeks after (firmware update only). Shiv |
